Drost, Sveegen win Huset’s Memorial Day Special by Inches

By Shawn Neisteadt

(Sioux Falls, SD– May 30, 2005) On a beautiful Memorial Day evening, fans were treated to several great finishes to some amazing racing at Huset’s Speedway. The final three features of the night were decided on the final corner, with great racing in the other classes as well.

The 360 Sprint Cars headlined the special holiday event and they would not disappoint. Daryl Reverts took the initial lead of the event, but spun hist #7 in the first turn. Amazingly, on Terry Reilly would make contact. John Kaiser took the lead of the complete restart and led as the yellow came out for Troy Vink one lap into the event. Vink spun his #77 in turn two. Jody Rosenboom was on the hard charge and on the second lap, Rosenboom had moved from thirteenth on the start to fifth as he overtook Mitch Runge. On the same lap the lead went to Jesse Drost as he used the cushion to motor by Kaiser and into the lead in turn four. One lap later, Dusty Wasmund took third from Justin Jacobsma.

On the fourth lap, Micah Schliemann broke into the top five in a major way as he passed Jacobsma and Rosenboom ant took third. Rosenboom made his way back into the top five on the fifth lap as he went to the high line and passed Jacobsma.

Drost led the pack into lap traffic on the seventh circuit of the event. At the same time, Rosenboom moved into fourth by passing Kaiser. Runge was back into the top five at the halfway point of the 18 lap event when he took the spot from Kaiser. On lap ten, Schliemann took second on the field as he passed Wasmund entering the first turn. Rosenboom followed Schliemann and took third one lap later.

Drost found himself in heavy traffic on the twelfth lap. The slower cars held Drost up momentarily and allowed Schliemann to take a look at the lead. Drost held on, but not for long as Schliemann took the lead on lap 14 in turn two, however the caution flag was waving as Mitch Runge was slowing on the track. Going back to the last completed lap, Drost assumed the lead once again.

On the resulting restart, Wasmund moved by Rosenboom and back into third with Bryan Dobesh taking fourth from Rosenboom on lap 16. As the white flag waved, it was replaced with the red as Dobesh tried to make it up to third, but tangled with the wall in turn two sending him and his #2 for a wild ride. Dobesh walked away unharmed.

That set up a two lap dash for the win. Drost led Schliemann into turn three on the restart, but Schliemann would not follow to the high groove as he dipped low to complete the slide job. Schliemann came sliding up the track, but Drost did not flinch and held the lead off turn four and to the white flag. The same scenario played out on the final turn as Schliemann came within inches of Drost as they raced for the win. Drost took the momentum off the turn and to the win followed closely by Schliemann. Rosenboom came back for third followed by Wasmund and Terry Reilly.

The action was just as intense in the Late Model Stock Car 16 lap feature. After running door to door with Matt Steuerwald for several laps, Ray Sveegen took the lead. It was far from over though as Steuerwald battled back several times. Gary Brown Jr moved into second on lap ten and went to the inside of Sveegen and battled for the lead. Sveegen ran the high line with Brown on the bottom lap after lap with the lead swapping countless times. It was too close to call on the final corner until Sveegen got the run off turn four and took the win by less than a car length over Brown. Darrin Korthals finished third followed by Rick VanderWeide and Steuerwald.

With five laps remaining in the Sportsmen feature, Mike McGillivray restarted fourth. McGillivray was the only car in the top five to go to the high line and he made it work as he took third from Kevin Broesder with four to go. With three laps to go McGillivray took second from Paul LeBahn. On the final lap McGillivray snuck his way by Curt VanBeek and McGillivray saw the checkered flags. VanBeek was second followed by Greg Roemen. Broesder was fourth with Paul LeBahn fifth.

Chad Patch held off a fast Lane Brenden in the Hobby Stock feature to take the win. Justin Arends was third followed by Tony Guischer. Chad Graves finished fifth.

Derrick Nordstrom took the lead of the Factory Stock feature halfway through the feature and never looked back as he scored the win. Jared Nytroe led the first half of the event and finished second. Derick Lux was third followed by Dan Carsrud.
