Meyer Wins Second of Huset’s Season, Martens wins first ever

By Shawn Neisteadt

(Sioux Falls, SD–May 28, 2005) The Huset’s Speedway Memorial Day Weekend double header kicked off Sunday night with some of the most fierce action of the season. At the end of the night, Chad Meyer, Jordan Martens, Darrin Korthals and Justin Arends all took home a trophy.

A field of 24 Outlaw Sprints thundered into action in their feature event. At the drop of the green, Mike Moore drove into the lead just ahead of Chuck McGillivray. Dusty Zomer, the winner the previous week then took second in turn three. Many positions swapped one lap into the event as Justin Henderson drove by Kenny Hansen and McGillivray to put his #33 into third. On the same lap, Zomer made the move entering turn three and took the lead.

Chad Meyer soon broke into the top five from his ninth starting position. On lap four, Meyer took fourth as he passed McGillivray in turn two and then third from Henderson in turn three. Lap traffic arrived on the fifth lap of the event. The race was eight laps old when Meyer used a slide job in turn one to take second from Moore. On the ninth lap, Meyer was breathing down the neck of Zomer as the top two were bumper to bumper. Billy Alley also moved into the top five on that lap.

The lead changed hands again on lap 11 when Meyer drove past Zomer in turn two. Zomer came back and took the lead back in the fourth turn one lap later. Zomer then put a cushion between himself and Meyer as he made a bold split of two lap cars. Henderson moved into third on lap 15.

Another lead change occurred on lap 17. Zomer banged into and climbed the wall at the flag stand. Meyer made the most of Zomer’s momentum breaker and drove back into the lead.

One lap later the yellow flag waved when several cars banged together on the front stretch. Johnn Cressman and Kenny Hansen sat stalled on the track. The incident happened just in front of Meyer, and the leader actually made hard contact with the stalled machines, but kept driving.

With three laps to go, the only red flag of the event waved when Eric Vanderploeg drove into the turn four wall and overturned the #7x. Vanderploeg was unharmed and blamed the incident on his own over-driving.

At the end it was Meyer’s second win of the year with Zomer second. Billy Alley drove from twelfth to third. Micah Schliemann was fourth with fifth going to Henderson.

On a restart one lap into the 360 sprint car feature, Jordan Martens moved by Doug Martens and Brandon Rokusek and into the lead. The 17 year old Martens led the rest of the way for his first ever win at Huset’s Speedway. In the closing laps, Dusty Ballenger was closing in on Martens and he struggled to hit his marks entering turn one.

Martens took the win with Ballenger second. Third went to Terry Reilly. Butch Hanssen was fourth with Micah Schliemann fifth.

It took only seven laps in the Late Model Stock Car feature for Darrin Korthals to drive from twelfth to the lead. Korthals never looked back as he took his second feature win in a row. Jeremiah Jordahl led the opening laps and finished second. Lee Schlumbohm was third followed by Jesse Akkerman. Gary Brown Jr rounded out the top five.

Justin Arends went to the high side of Chad Graves on the final lap of the Hobby Stock feature. The two raced evenly into the final set of turn and Arends took the lead off turn for and drove to the win. Graves settled for second with third going to Tracy Johnson. Lane Brenden came back from an early race incident to fourth with Dave Schwans in fifth.
