Zomer Drives to First Outlaw Win

By Shawn Neisteadt

(Sioux Falls, SD– May 22, 2005) When Dusty Zomer made the jump from go-karts into sprint cars, many took note. After winning the 360 sprint car title at Huset’s Speedway in 2004, even more knew the name. Outlaw Sprint Car fans, you are now introduced to the young talent from Brandon, South Dakota as he took his first win in the Outlaw Sprint class Sunday night at Huset’s Speedway.

Zomer led all 25 laps of the Interstate Auto Center Outlaw Sprint Feature to claim his win. The race was not all the easy as Justin Henderson and Gregg Bakker each mounted runs at the lead, however, the 410 class rookie was too strong on this night and walked away in the end for the win.

While Zomer led the duration of the event, there was plenty of action. Before one lap was counted, the red waved over the speedway when the #10 of Ricky Logan, #9 of Micah Schlieman #4AU of Lynton Jeffrey all tangled on the front stretch. All drivers were unharmed. A caution waved on the ninth lap of the event when Chuck McGillivray broke the right rear wheel and slowed on the speedway. Four laps later, Clint Garner looped his #40 in the fourth turn collecting Mike Moore and Brock Dump. Dump tipped his #12, his car was dinged, however Dump walked away unharmed. The final stop of the race came with four laps remaining when Johnn Cressman, who was running well in the top five, slapped the turn two wall resulting in a violent set of flips. The car went to the infield behind the tow truck, but Cressman was able to walk away.

At the finish it was all Zomer. Bakker drove from eleventh to second with third going to Henderson. From tenth to fourth went Jake Peters with Mark Dobmeier rounding out the top five.

The 360 feature had a much different tone. The race went from flag to flag with Lyle Howey III walking away from the field to score his first Huset’s win since July 2003. Kevin Flowers is competing at Huset’s Speedway this season for the fist time of his career and drove to a second place finish. Cody Hansen was fast and finished third followed by Brent Vonk. The driver that has passed the most cars thus far in the season in the 360 class is Jody Rosenboom. Rosenboom drove from tenth to fifth.

The first lap of the Late Model Stock Car feature had three different leaders. Don Gerritsen, Jr., Chad Schettler and Jesse Akkermen all led a portion of the first lap. Schettler took the lead from there and led until lap three when Gerritsen again assumed the top spot. Akkerman took second from Schettler on the fifth lap. On lap six, Gerritsen and Akkermen were side by side for the lead while just behind them, Schettler and Darrin Korthals were door to door for third. Korthals third in that battle and set his sights on the leaders. Korthals overtook Akkermen on lap eight and then the lead on the twelfth circuit. Korthals led the final four laps for his second win ever at Huset’s. Gerritsen finished the best of all the rookies in the event with his second place. Akkermen has his best finish of the year in third with Rick VanderWeide fourth followed by Chad Overgaard.

Lane Brenden came from seventh on the starting grid to take the win of the Hobby Stock feature. Chad Graves was second followed by Jeff Deighton. Joe Bergheim and Brett Larson rounded out the top five.

Huset’s Speedway is host of a double dip of action this coming Memorial Day Weekend. Huset’s hosts a full show on Sunday with a Memorial Day Special on Monday.
