McCarl Makes Final Turn Move for Huset’s Win

By Shawn Neisteadt

(Sioux Falls, SD—May 15, 2005) When the 2004 season ended, Terry McCarl announced he would run the following season with the World of Outlaws Sprint Series. That may have been a relief to the contenders of Huset’s Speedway at that time, but an Outlaws rain-out allowed McCarl to make a trip back to the playground. There were no monkey bars on this playground, however the lead would swing McCarl’s way on the final lap.

Chuck McGillivray took the early lead of Sunday nights 25 lap Interstate Auto Parts Outlaw Sprint feature. The caution flag waved with just one lap counted when a three-wide battle resulted in Mike Moore spinning his #69 in turn four. With nowhere to go, Johnn Cressman drove into Moore. Both drivers were unharmed, but their race came to an early end.

As the field resumed racing, Lynton Jeffrey took second from Shane Spurlock and Gregg Bakker moved into the top five as he overtook Ricky Logan. Bakker continued to charge as he took fourth from Spurlock on the next lap and then third position was Bakker’s on lap three as he passed Chuck Swenson. A new leader emerged on the fourth lap when Jeffrey passed McGillivray on the entrance of turn one.

Soon the leaders were in lap traffic and things were getting even hotter on the track. Bakker drove his was up to second while McCarl and Jake Peters fought relentlessly for the fourth position. The two sliced, diced and even banged wheels in their battle.

The red flag came out on lap 13 when Justin Henderson took his #33 up and over in turn one. Henderson walked away uninjured, but the car was done for the night.

The lead changed hands again on lap 17. This time it was Bakker’s turn to pace the field as he assumed the top spot from Jeffery as they raced off turn four. McCarl followed and moved into second on the following lap. Bakker led McCarl and Jeffery into traffic on lap 19. With 5 laps remaining, McCarl moved to the inside of Bakker in turn two, but a lap car did not allow for McCarl to take the lead. On lap 21, Jake Peters took third from Jeffery.

Bakker led McCarl by five car lengths to the white flag. It was in turn two when the racing turned from hot, to an inferno. Bakker broke his #11x loose off of turn two allowing McCarl to drive up to his back bumper. With more momentum, McCarl went to the outside of Bakker as they entered the final set of turns. Bakker closed the door as he executed the squeeze play on McCarl. All was not done as McCarl quickly reloaded and shot to the inside of Bakker as they came off turn four. At the finish line it was a mere 4 feet deciding the victor, and that was McCarl. Bakker settled for second with Peters third. Jeffery was fourth and Chad Meyer drove from eleventh to fifth. Micah Schliemann won the “B” feature.

In the 360 Sprint Car feature it was Micah Schliemann coming from fourteenth on the starting grid to the lead on lap 14 of the 18 lap race. Ryan Bickett led from that start until being passed by Schliemann. Bickett finished second followed by Mitch Runge. Butch Hanssen drove from tenth to fourth with Casey Abbas fifth. One spot out of the top five was Jody Rosenboom as he crossed the line sixth after winning the “B” feature and starting seventeenth.

In a great Late Model Stock Car feature, the fans witnessed the top two cars racing literally door to door with just a couple of laps remaining. Gary Brown, Jr. raced from eleventh to the lead in just eight laps. The race was far from over though as Rick VanderWeide took second on lap nine and then set his sights on the leader. Brown was running his traditional high groove and that allowed VanderWeide to use the short way around the track to make it a dead even race for the lead. Brown then moved to the bottom groove and closed the door on VanderWeide and the rest of the field. Brown went on for his twenty-fifth career win at Huset’s Speedway. VanderWeide was second with Darrin Korthals driving from tenth to third. Jeff Kroger was fourth with Lee Schlumbohm fifth. Justin Glaser took the checkered flag in the “B” feature.

Chad Patch led all 12 laps of the Hobby Stock feature to claim the win. Justin Arends was second with third going to Chad Graves. Tracy Johnson contended for the lead early in the race and finished fourth with Tony Guischer rounding out the top five.

With 34 Outlaw Sprint Cars on hand for this night, make sure that you do not miss out the next night of racing at Huset’s Speedway coming up this Sunday at 8 pm Sharp.
