Bakker, Zomer, Schlumbohm, Deutsch claim Huset’s Titles.

By Shawn Neisteadt

(September 11, 2004 – Sioux Falls, SD) The battle was the final night of racing for the Outlaw Sprints. The war was the season’s points title. Mark Dobmeier and Gregg Bakker took to the track for the final points race of the season, with Dobmeier having a two point edge on Bakker. That meant Bakker needed to beat Dobmeier by two positions just to tie, three positions to win.

Dobmeier was running third with just five laps remaining in the season. Bakker was following a close fourth, but that was just where Dobmeier needed him. But with a puff of smoke and a roar of flames, the dream of a championship for Dobmeier was gone. His engine let go with just five laps remaining. Bakker went on to finish fourth and claim the title.

Clint Garner led the entire feature for the win. Gary DeWall was second with Chad Meyer third. Bakker, the 2004 champion, took fourth with fifth going to Mike Moore.

Dusty Zomer had all but locked up the 360 point title, but he left no doubt to the field as he took the win and claimed the championship in the 360 sprints. Doug Martens led the first half of the race and finished second. Lee Goos Jr was third. Terry Reilly made a last lap pass for fourth with Dusty Ballenger in fifth.

Ray Sveegen took his first win of the season in the Late Model Stock Car feature. Sveegen took the lead from Howard Baartman as the came to the white flag. Baartman settled for second followed by Jesse Akkerman. Lee Schlumbohm took the 2004 championship as he finished fourth with fifth going to Matt Steuerwald.

The Late Model Stock Cars also competed in the Annual Nordstrom’s Dash for cash. Gary Brown Jr dominated the first 24 laps which gave him a total of $1200. He also had the second fastest pit stop worth $300. But he slowed with just 6 laps to go giving the lead to Lee Schlumbohm. Schlumbohm led the rest of the way to claim the $1000 to win check. Don Bickett and his orange peeler team has the fastest pit stop, which was worth $500.

Colter Deutsch may have tipped his #5 Hobby Stock onto its side in the feature, but he still finished third. That locked his third championship. Lane Brenden took the win with Chad Patch second. Deutsch, Josh Klay and Justin Arends rounded out the top five.

Greg Roeman took the win of the Sportsmen feature as they competed for Lake County Speedway points. Paul LeBahn was second with third going to Matt Ayres. Marty Halouska and Steve Eliason followed.

Huset’s Speedway races for the final time of the season with the 40th annual National Cheater’s Day September 24-26.
