McCarl Doubles Gold Cup Weekend

By Shawn Neisteadt

(August 22, 2004-Sioux Falls, SD)  One night after taking his third career Huset's Speedway Gold Cup win, Terry McCarl claimed his seventh win of the points season at Huset's Speedway.

Jake Peters rocketed from the pole position to the lead of the 25 lap Outlaw Sprint feature as the green flag waved.  Chad Meyer came off the second row and took second from Chad Radel in turn four.  On the second lap, Terry McCarl had already made his way from the fourth row into the top five and took fourth from Clint Garner.

Peters led the field into lap traffic only three laps into the event.  The traffic held up Peters for just a moment, but the moment was all that was needed for Meyer to drive into the lead in turn two on lap four.  The traffic became even more dense on the fifth lap as the traffic raced three wide in front of the leaders.  On the seventh lap, McCarl tried to take third from Radel, but instead it was Radel putting the moves on Peters and the Billion Automotive #25 drove into second.  One lap later, McCarl drove around Peters and Radel and into second place.

The race was slowed on lap 10 when the #R19 of Jason Solwold spun in turn four.  That took the leaders out of traffic for a few laps and things changed around in the top five.  Peters drove by Radel and back to third on the restart.  Radel then fell victim to Garner as Garner slide jobbed his was by Radel in turn four. Gregg Bakker then tried to break into the top five as he raced Radel on lap eleven.

Meyer took the leaders into traffic on the fourteenth lap.  Two laps later McCarl got a great run off turn two and moved into the lead.  That was the move for the win as McCarl led the rest of the way for his seventh points race win of the year.  Meyer was a close second followed by Peters.

'The Mad Man' Kerry Madsen drove the TK Concrete #55T from seventeenth to fourth with fifth going to Bakker.

It's never over until you see the checkered flag, and that has never been so true as in Sunday Night's 360 Sprint feature.  Mitch Runge took the lead of the 18 lap event at the drop of the green.  Runge was still leading as the white flag came out.   Terry Reilly was running second with Casey Abbas in third.  Abbas went to the inside of Reilly in turn one on the final lap and took second.  In a dramatic final turn, Abbas stuck to the inside of turn four and went to the win.  Runge settled for second with Reilly third.  Dusty Ballenger came from the sixth row finish fourth ahead of Dusty Zomer.

Lee Schlumbohm had a comfortable lead of the Late Model Stock Car feature until the caution flag waved on the white flag lap.  The caution came out for Gary Brown Jr who was battling within the top five looped around on the backstretch.  Dale Furby was unable to slow and the two cars piled together ending each of the drivers evenings.

On the restart Howard Baartman drove from third to second and made a charge at the lead on the final lap.  Schlumbohm was too tough however as he took his fifth win of the year.  Ray Sveegen took third followed by Jesse Akkerman and Rick Vander Weide.

Colter Deutsch rode the rim of the speedway to take his fifth win in the Hobby Stock feature.  Josh Klay ran second with third going to Joey Scheeley.  Jeff Deighton took fourth.

Huset's Speedway races again this Sunday Night.
