Jay Egge All-Star Memorial Crowns 6 winners at Huset’s Speedway

By Shawn Neisteadt

(August 1, 2004—Sioux Falls, SD) Those that have fallen for the sport of racing were honored Sunday night at Huset’s with the annual Jay Egge All-Star Memorial. The event showcases double features in both sprint car classes. The finish of the first feature in inverted to start the second.

One of the wildest moments ever witnessed kicked off the first 25 lap Outlaw Sprint feature. Rob Tvedt stated spinning the #1wx in turn two. The horses came to life as the car was backwards lifting the front wheels. The car then actually flipped just catching the back of the wing into the ground. Somehow the car came back onto all four tires and Tvedt kept the engine lit and drove away from his own red flag. Bill Boles took the initial lead with Marlon Jones in second. Micah Schliemann charge past John Lambertz and into fifth on the third lap. On lap four. Chad Radel took third as he passed Robert Bell in turn two. Schliemann followed as he took fourth on the following lap. Jason Solwold was also on the move as he taced the #R19 into fifth off turn four. Marlon Jones put the Tough Floors #5x into the lead on lap seven as he overtook Boles. On the ninth lap, Boles fell a few more positions and Radel took second and Schliemann drove into third. Mark Dobmeier made his way to the top five, but Lynton Jeffrey was moving and took fifth on lap 20. With four laps remaining, Solwold took third from Schliemann.

At the checkered it was Jones, the 1988 champion, taking his first win since 1999. It wsa the 44 year-olds twenty first career win. Solwald charged to second in the closing laps with Radel third. Schliemann was fourth with fifth going to Jeffrey.

A wheel packed with mud and perhaps some creative planning put Terry McCarl on the pole position for the second Outlaw Sprint feature. McCarl dominated the race, but the action behind him was a treat. On the seventh lap of the race, Jeffrey had driven from fourteenth and was again in the top five. On the tenth lap, Gary DeWall took second from Matt Wasmund as the leaders were all in traffic. One lap later, Gregg Bakker was in third as he overtook Wasmund in turn two. Jeffrey was still moving forward as he took fourth from Wasmund on lap 12. Bakker and DeWall began to battle for second on lap 13 when Bakker made the pass. DeWall stormed back and into second on lap 18. But the car really moving was Jeffrey as the passed both Bakker and DeWall and took second.

McCarl won the feature. His first ever win on a Jay Egge All-Star Memorial event. Jeffrey was second. Bakker and DeWall fought to the finish with Bakker driving from eleventh to third. DeWall started eighth to take fourth. Mark Dobmeier drove from thirteenth to fifth.

The 360 sprint class also ran double features.

Terry Reilly led the entire distance of the first 18 lap feature to grab the win. The previous week, Reilly was leading the feature when the steering arm broke, costing him the win. Mitch Runge was second with third going to Randy Droescher. Bill Fredin was fourth with Butch Hanssen driving from eleventh to take fifth. The race was red flagged on lap seven when the #27 of Jesse Drost slammed the turn two wall and flipped. Drost was unharmed, but the night ending wreck was a disappointment to the team as they had won the night before at Lake County Speedway.

Dusty Ballenger took the lead of the second feature one lap into the event from Dusty Wasmund. Ballenger led the rest of the way for the win. Ballenger was the only driving doing the double dip on double feature night. Counting the outlaw heats and features, plus the 360 features, Ballenger wheeled around the 3/8 mile track 96 times. Well over 100 if you added in hot laps. Dusty Zomer was the hard charger when the two features were combined as he took second in the second feature after starting eleventh. Butch Hanssen almost lost the handle on the final lap but collecting the car to take third. Fourth went to Steve Ballenger and Reilly started sixteenth and came to fifth.

It was door to door action in the Late Model Stock Car feature. Justin Glaser drove a perfect race to take his first ever win at Huset’s. Don Bickett was second with third going to Howard Baartman. Gary Brown Jr held off Ray Sveegen at the line for fourth and fifth respectively. Brad Klaassen and Dale Furby and and Bickett won the heat races.

Justin Arends took the lead seven laps into the Hobby Stock feature and went on to his first ever win at Huset’s. Lane Brenden was second with third going to Colter Deutsch. Corey Schmuck was fourth with fifth going to Steve Eliason. Arends and Chad Patch won the heat races.

Huset’s runs a regular program with all 4 classes this Sunday. Also get set for the Outlaw Challenge-Gold Cup coming up on Saturday August 21.
