Jeffrey Scores Huset's Win, Hanssen bests 360 Class

By Shawn Neisteadt

(July 4, 2004-Sioux Falls, SD) As American's joined together to celebrate another birthday of their great nation, fans gathered at Huset's for two spectacular displays. First it was the great action on the track that excited the hillside. When the cars were parked, in traditional Huset's style, the sky was set ablaze with the areas largest display of fireworks. On what was a festive and joyous night, all were winners. But on the track it was Lynton Jeffrey, Butch Hanssen, Gary Brown Jr and Lane Brenden taking trophies.

Lynton Jeffrey took the initial lead of the Outlaw Sprint feature as the green flag waved. John Lambertz settled int second with Gregg Bakker third. With one lap counted Bakker put the move on Lambertz but the pass was negated when the red flag came out for Tim St. Arnold as he had taken a tumble on the backstretch. St. Arnold was unharmed but out of the event. On the resulting restart, Chad Meyer was trying to break into the top five when he connected with the wall in turn two. That slowed the #1w with a flat right rear tire. Meyer restarted but pulled in one lap later when the suspension troubles proved too tough to handle.

Clint Garner was on the move on the restart as he passed Bill Boles for fourth on the restart. On the third lap, Jake Peters took fifth from Boles as they entered turn one. Lap traffic was a factor on lap five when Jeffrey led the field to traffic. On that fifth lap, Bakker took second from Lambertz. On the ninth lap the caution waved when the #9 of Micah Schliemann spun coming off turn two.

The caution bunched the field up and the racing was again fierce on the drop of the green. Lambertz took second from Bakker in turn two. Then Garner executed the slide job in turn four to take third from Bakker. As they raced into turn one, Bakker retaliated and moved back into third around Garner and around Lambertz entering turn three for second.

Bakker was reeling in Jeffrey as they again drove into lap traffic on lap 13. One lap later, Jake Peters drive into fourth but Garner was not giving up and reclaimed the position. On the sixteenth lap Mark Dobmeier took fifth from Peters as Dobmeier raced his way from the fourth row. One lap later, Peters was again in the top five as he passed Dobmeier in turn two. That battle was not over as they again swapped the positions on lap 20 and 21. Lambertz top five run ended on lap 22 when his #12 broke loose in turn two and Lambertz lost several positions.

At the checkered it was Jeffrey with his first win of the season. Bakker took a strong second with Dobmeier making the late charge for third. Garner was fourth with Jason Solwold driving the #R19 from tenth to fifth. Kerry Madsen drove from nineteenth to sixth after winning the "B" feature. Dobmeier, Bakker and Dusty Ballenger won the heat races.

The 360 Sprint 18 lap feature was exciting as well. Rob Danielson took the initial lead, but before he could complete the first lap, Butch Hanssen has shot from the second row to the lead. With a lap counted, Bill Fredin took second from Danielson as they entered turn one. On the second lap Terry Reilly motored past Brad Nelson and Danielson into third. Eric Lutz passed Danielson for fifth.

Three laps were in the books when the yellow waved from Brent Vonk in turn two. Vonk has made contact with the wall and come to a stop. On the restart, Lutz and Nelson made contact bringing out another caution when Nelson stopped in turn four. Reilly moved up to second on the restart and on the tenth lap Reilly and Hanssen were side by side for the lead. Hanssen held on to the lead.

Dusty Zomer came charging through the pack and by the sixteenth lap was in third. The yellow waved to set up a two lap dash to the end. In those final two laps, Hanssen was able to get away for the win as the action behind him heated up. Zomer and Reilly sliced and diced their ways to the end with Reilly holing on to second from the twelfth starting spot. Zomer was third from eleventh with Steve Ballenger coming from sixteenth for fouth. Steve Ballenger had won the "B" feature. Lutz rounded out the top five.

Dusty Ballenger took a hard ride on the fifteenth lap of the feature. Ballenger was checked to be unharmed from the safety crew, but elected not to drive in the outlaw sprint feature.

Gary Brown Jr took the lead of the Late Model Stock Car feature on lap four when race leader, Kent Plimpton spun in turn four. Brown, a two-time champion led the rest of the way for the win. Lee Schlumbohm drove from twelfth to second with Matt Steuerwald third. Howard Baartman inched out Jesse Ackerman for fourth.

It was a door to door final lap in the Hobby Stock feature, but Lane Brenden held on for his second win of the year. Josh Klay was second with third going to Larry Krach. Chad Patch was fourth with Corey Schmuck fifth.

The World of Outlaws Sprint Series invades Huset's Speedway on Tuesday July 6 for "the greatest show in dirt." The regular action heats up again next Sunday.
