McCarl ends bumpy weekend with win, Grein gets first win in 13 years

By Shawn Neisteadt

(June 27, 2004-Sioux Falls, SD) A night that started with Terry McCarl flipping in hot laps, ended with McCarl in victory lane. Miles Grein picked up his first Huset's win since 1991. Mark DeBoer took his first win of the year at Huset's in the Late Model Stock Cars while Josh Klay topped the Hobby Stock field.

Dusty Ballenger drove into the lead of the Interstate Auto Parts Outlaw Sprint feature as the green flag dropped on the 25 lap event. Bill Boles, Mark Dobmeier Ryan Voss and Chuck McGillivray came by the flagstand to finish the first lap in the top five. On the second lap, Rob Tvedte drove into the top five as he passed Voss for fifth. McGillivray had just driven into fourth. On the third lap it was Terry McCarl moving into the top five as he passed Tvedte in the second turn. The race was on its sixth lap when McCarl used the high line to pass McGillivray for fourth.

Lap traffic was mixing in with the leaders as the eighth lap came to an end. On the eighth lap, Lynton Jeffrey drove past McGillivray and into the top five in turn four. Dobmeier took second from Boles on the tenth lap as they raced off the fourth turn. Boles stormed back and retook second on the next lap in the second turn. Dobmeier took second once again in the third turn. On lap 13, McCarl made his way around Boles and took third as they came to end the lap. On the fifteenth lap, Dobmeier inched his way around Ballenger, but Ballenger hung in strong and regained the lead entering the next turn. Jeffrey moved into fourth on that same lap as he overtook Boles. One lap later McCarl took second from Dobmeier as they came off turn two. One lap later McCarl went to the bottom of Ballenger in turn four and drove into the lead.

That was the pass for the win as McCarl took his fourth win of the year at Huset's. This win for McCarl was from eleventh on the starting grid. Ballenger took second with Dobmeier third. Jeffrey was fourth with McGillivray making his way back into the top five at the finish. The Outlaw Sprint "B" feature was won by Gregg Bakker. Tvedte, Boles and Micah Schliemann won the heat races.

In the 18 lap 360 sprint feature it was all Miles Grein as he led all the entire distance of the race. The race was stopped on lap five when Terry Reilly slapped the turn three wall and flipped wildly in the #69R. The incident also collected the #3 of Steve Ballenger. Both drivers were unharmed, and Steve Ballenger was able to get back into the event.

Grein took the win, the tenth of his career, but his first since August of 1991. Dusty Ballenger was the car on the move as the Harrisburg driver charged from thirteenth to take second. Lee Goos Jr, was the third car across the finish line but did not meet the minimum weight of 1550 pounds and was disqualified. That moved Eric McGillivray into third with Troy Vink fourth. Eric Lutz rounded out the top five. Ryan Bickett took the checkereds in the "B" feature while McGillivray, Lutz, Brent Vonk and Randy Droescher took the heat races.

Rob Hirsch took the lead of the Late Model Stock Car feature at the drop of the green but relinquished the lead when he spun in turn four. The incident also collected Matt Steuerwald and Kent Plimpton.

On the restart, Mark DeBoer drove to the top spot with Jesse Ackerman following in second. With one lap counted, Don Bickett took second from Ackerman in the fourth turn. On the second lap, Lee Schlumbohm drove by Chad Schettler for fourth, but Schettler came back to retake the position. The race again heated up on the next lap when Schlumbohm took fourth once again. The race was on its sixth lap when the caution waved for Kent Plimpton.

On the restart, Schlumbohm was on the move as he took third from Ackerman then second from Bickett. Bickett and Ackerman then went at it for third place swapping it several times.

At the finish it was DeBoer with his second ever win at Huset's. DeBoer has also won Friday night at Rapid Speedway. Schlumbohm finished second with Ackerman third. Fourth went to Bickett with Schettler in fifth. DeBoer and Bickett won the heat races.

Josh Klay took the lead of the Hobby Stock feature from Colter Deutsch one lap into the event. Klay led the rest of the way to take the win with Deutsch in second. Lane Brenden took third with fourth going to Tony Guischer. Steve Eliason was fifth.

Huset's Speedway races again on July 4 with a gigantic fireworks display to follow the races. Fireworks of a different kind hit the track on Tuesday July 6 when the World of Outlaws Sprint Series visits Huset's Speedway.
