Jake Peters Grabs First Huset's Win of Season

By Shawn Neisteadt

(June 20, 2004-Sioux Falls, SD) On a night of fast, furious action it was Jake Peters topping the Outlaw Sprints at Huset's Speedway. Steve Ballenger, Chad Schettler and Steve Eliason also found their ways back to victory lane.

Jim Smith took the initial lead of the 25 lap Outlaw Sprint feature. Jake Peters moved from the second row to the second position on the opening lap. On the second lap, Chad Meyer passed Chuck McGillivray for fifth, but McGillivray came back to retake the position on the next lap. Meyer then looped his #1w, but kept it lit and continued on. The caution waved with four laps counted when John Lambertz spun in turn two. On the resulting restart, Mike Moore was caught jumping and sent to the tail. The next restart saw the #71 of Robert Bell tip over in turn two. Bell walked away unharmed.

On the restart, Peters grabbed the lead from Smith in turn two and Gregg Bakker snatched third from Marlon Jones. Jones came back to take third from Bakker in turn four. Clint Garner made his way into the top five on the fifth lap when he passed McGillivray entering turn three. Smith then bobbled just enough to allow Jones to take second and Bakker to drive into third. The sixth lap of the race had Garner in fourth as he passed Smith. One lap later it was Mark Dobmeier driving into the top five, but that run ended on lap nine when the #13 slowed and pull off the speedway.

Peters had a eight car length advantage when he led his way into lap traffic on the twelfth lap. Bakker took the second position from Jones on lap 15 and the #11x was on a mission to the front. However, just as Dobmeier had done, Bakker slowed and pulled to the pits.

At the finish it was Jake Peters with his first win of the season at Huset's. Garner charged to take second with third going to Jones. Gary DeWall assumed the points lead with his fourth place finish and Micah Schliemann was fifth.

Steve Ballenger was on a sting in the 360 Sprint 18 lap feature event. Ballenger took the initial lead of the race with Brock Dump in second. On the second lap of the race, Gordy Vogelaar drove into the top five as he overtook Cody Hansen. On the fourth lap it was Dusty Ballenger on the move as he took third from Brandon Rokusek as they entered turn three.

Lap traffic was becoming and issue on lap nine, but the yellow flag would change that. Dump spun the #12 in turn four while running in second place. Amazingly the rest of the field avoided contact and Dump was able to restart at the tail of the field. On the restart, Terry Reilly drove past Rokusek and took third as Vogelaar passed Dusty Ballenger for second. Vogelaar then set his sights on the lead held by Steve Ballenger. Vogelaar attempted to pass for the lead on the low side, but that showed Steve Ballenger the other groove. On the twelfth lap, Steve Ballenger moved to the bottom and drove off to the win. It was Steve Ballenger's second win of the year at Huset's. Vogelaar was second ahead of Dusty Ballenger. Terry Reilly came from ninth to take fourth with Rokusek in fifth. The "B" feature was won by Troy Meyer.

From a restart with six laps to go, to the finish of the Late Model Stock Car feature, Chad Schettler and Gary Brown Jr ran door to door. Schettler had led from the start of the race while Brown was charging from the fourth row. Schettler ran the top while Brown was taking the short way around the track. The lead even swapped a few times, but never by more than five feet. At the white flag it was dead even between the top two. They ran that was as they came to the checkered and it was Schettler by just a few inches for his second win of the year. Brown took second. Lee Schlumbohm drove from tenth to third. Justin Glaser and Perry Tschetter rounded out the top five.

It was close action in the Hobby Stock feature as well as Steve Eliason held off Josh Klay for the win. Eliason led the distance of the race for this second win of the season. Klay settled for second with third going to Colter Deutsch. Tony Guischer fourth followed by Lane Brenden.

Huset's Speedway has a regular program this Sunday. Also mark the calendar as Lithia Chevrolet and Dodge present the World of Outlaws Sprint Series on the tours fastest 3/8 mile track on July 6.
