Mother Nature, Steve Ballenger, Ryan Bickett and Others Grab Memorial Day Weekend Wins at Huset's Speedway.

By Shawn Neisteadt

(May 30-31, 2004-Sioux Falls, SD) The Memorial Day weekend is a traditional double-header for Huset's Speedway, but Mother Nature would throw some kinks in the programs. The Hobby Stock and Late Model Stock Car features were completed on Sunday before rains halted the sprint car action. Monday was a full race with the make-up 360 sprint feature with double features slated for Outlaw Sprints on June 6.

It was Troy Vink grabbing the initial lead of the make-up feature of the 360 sprints on Memorial Day. Mitch Runge settled into the second position with Cody Hansen in third. Near the halfway point of the 18 lap event, Steve Ballenger drove past Hansen and into third. Ballenger was the car to watch out front as he tried to real in the leaders. With five trips around the track remaining, Ballenger went past Runge for second. One lap later, Ballenger grabbed the lead in turn three.

Ballenger led the closing laps for his first Huset's feature win of the year. Vink was second with Runge third. Hansen took forth and Dusty Zomer drove from eleventh to take fifth.

Ryan Bickett took the initial lead of the second 360 sprint feature of Monday night. Lyle Howey III was looking good and took the top spot off the fourth turn. Those two traded the top spot several times in the opening laps. Just four laps into the race, Dusty Ballenger had driven into the top five from twelfth on the starting grid as he overtook Jordan Martens. Dusty Zomer was also on the move and with six laps counted Zomer passed Dusty Ballenger for fifth. Zomer was charging from fifteenth. The battle of Dusty and Dusty continued with Dusty Ballenger going high in turn three and passing Zomer. The caution waved on lap seven when the #35 of Eric McGillivray went around.

On the ensuing restart, Dusty Ballenger drove into third. Just ahead of him the lead was heating up as Eric Lutz pulled along side Bickett. Bickett held strong on the cushion and maintained the lead. On the ninth lap Zomer drove past Howey with Steve Ballenger as they took the fourth and fifth positions. Dusty Ballenger continued his charge as he went past Lutz into second, with his father, Steve Ballenger following and into third. The caution waved again with seven laps remaining when Jody Rosenboom slowed collecting Brent Vonk and Doug Martens.

Bickett led the son-father Ballenger duo back to the start with seven laps to go. Dusty Ballenger tried several times to slide into the lead, but the momentum of Bickett was too quick to be overtaken. Coming for the checkered, Steve Ballenger drove past Dusty for second. Bickett grabbed the win, his first of the year at Huset's and second of his career. Steve Ballenger, who had won the "B" feature, drove from seventeenth to second. Dusty Ballenger passed his way from twelfth to third. Zomer came from fifteenth to fourth and Butch Hanssen drove from thirteenth to fifth.

"If I bobbled, they (the Ballenger's) were going to eat me up and spit me out for lunch," said Bickett after the win. Bickett had won a feature earlier in the season at Lake County Speedway.

Sunday night's Late Model Stock Car feature was an interesting one to say the least. Rick Goth paced the field for the entire event, but the weather would spice things up. Eight of the fifteen laps were in the books when the rain started to fall. The slick track conditions from the rain forced a yellow flag. The cars kept circling the track and within a few minutes, the rain has slowed and the track was race ready. The rain held off until there were just two laps to go. The sky then opened up and turned the 3/8 mile speedway into something more like a skating pond. The race was considered complete at that point with Goth claiming his first win of the year. Chad Schettler ran second with Dale Furby third. Howard Baartman and Don Bickett rounded out the top five.

Jeff Kroger took the initial lead of the Memorial Day Late Model Stock Car feature. The lead lasted until Lee Schlumbohm drove into the lead entering the first turn on lap three. Schlumbohm was challenged again by Kroger, but it was Gary Brown, Jr. on Schlumbohm's bumper with just three laps to go. Schlumbohm held off Brown to take his second win of the year. Brown took second with Kroger third. Goth finished fourth with Jesse Ackerman fifth.

The Sportsmen Stock Cars made their first appearance of the year on Memorial Day. Kevin Broesder and Rick VanderWeide ran door-to-door for the lead in the opening laps of the 12 lap feature. However, that was interrupted when Broesder broke loose and spun out entering turn three.

On the resulting restart, Joey Hofer ran into second as he went past Anthony Mann. Hofer and VanderWeide traded the lead a couple of times, but it was VanderWeide leading the field back to the green with just two laps remaining after a caution. VanderWeide led the field to the green, but Hofer was able to get the line entering turn one and drove into the lead. Hofer led back to the checkered for his first ever win at Huset's. VanderWeide was second with Mann third. Don Gerritsen, Jr. was fourth with Kevin Spurgin fifth.

Lane Brenden led all 12 laps of the Hobby Stock feature on Sunday night to grab his second win of the year at Huset's. Josh Klay was second with Steve Eliason third. Justin Arends and Tony Guischer fifth.

It took four laps for Josh Klay to drive from fourth to the lead of the Hobby Stock feature on Monday night. Klay drove to the win ahead of Colter Deutsch, Justin LeBahn, Denton Potter and Steve Eliason.

Huset's Speedway will race again this Sunday with a full program plus the make-up Outlaw Sprint feature.
