Dobmeier, Fredin: Two New Winners Top Sprints at Huset's

By Shawn Neisteadt

On a chilly spring evening, die-hard race fans and drivers flowed into Huset's Speedway for the second night of the young season. By the end of the night, the cheers for two new winners were as loud as the full field of engines.

In the Interstate Auto Parts Outlaw Sprint "A" Feature it was Lynton Jeffrey taking the early race lead from the front row. Micah Schliemann was running strong early on in the 25 lap event as Schliemann took second from Ryan Voss with just one lap counted. Gary DeWall moved into the top five on the same lap as he overtook fifth from Larry Ball, Jr. Schliemann was living up to his "Dr. Fast" nickname on lap two when he became the new race leader coming off turn two. The crowd took notice of Mark Dobmeier on lap three when Dobmeier took third place from Dusty Ballenger. Dobmeier was not about to slow down there at the Grand Forks, ND driver went past Jeffrey on the fourth lap to take over second.

The race was only seven laps old when the third leader of the event came to the front. Dobmeier had caught and then passed Schliemann in turn two. Lap traffic was becoming a factor at the same time. Ballenger was holding strong and moved into the third position on lap eight. Jake Peters was the next to pass Jeffrey for fourth place on lap ten. DeWall moved back into the top five on the eleventh lap.

Jason Solwold, a two-time Skagit Speedway champion, was pacing Terry McCarl as the two heavy hitters came to the front from the eighth row. Solwold took fourth with seven laps remaining. Then the Washington native took third one lap later with McCarl moving into fourth. Those two continued to fly around the track, but out front Dobmeier was checked out and en route to his first ever win at Huset's Speedway.

"It's indescribable. It just feels awesome," said Dobmeier, the defending Northern Outlaw Sprint Association champion. "Last week we came from tenth to third and that gave us a confidence boost for tonight, and tonight we got 'er done." The new winner added, "This is a little above NOSA. When you can win here, you're doing something."

Dobmeier drove from eighth to the win. Solwold, in his first Huset's appearance drove from sixteenth to second. McCarl drove from fifteenth to take third. That totals over 30 cars passed in the top three finishers alone, a good indication of the quality of racing. Schliemann took the fourth spot and Jake Peters finished fifth.

There was another new winner taking the double checkered flags in the NMRA 360 sprint feature. "I did this two years ago and led all but the last corner," said Bill Fredin of Windom, MN with a big smile on his face after his first win. I was just hoping there was no one behind me."

There was some one behind Fredin at the finish, and that someone was Dusty Ballenger. As Fredin led flag to flag, Ballenger started tenth and worked his way forward, moving into the top five one third of the way through the 18 lap event. Ballenger then went on a terror on lap ten as he hooked up to the cushion and picked his way to second. Brent Vonk, who led the majority of the feature the night before at Lake County Speedway, held strong for a third place finish. Dusty Wasmund finished fourth and Terry Reilly charged from fifteenth to take fifth.

The Late Model Stock Car feature took us back to the old-days of the class with a little extracurricular activity after the checkereds fell. Dale Furby had led the majority of the race and was leading as the field ran past the white flag. Entering the final set of turns, Lee Schlumbohm dove to the inside of Furby. Schlumbohm and Furby banged some doors and Schlumbohm led the final quarter of a lap to the win. The winner of this one came from the fifteenth starting position. Jesse Ackerman snuck past Furby as well to take second. Furby was third with Justin Glaser in fourth. Scott Freet finished fifth.

Gary Brown, Jr. continued his bad luck streak when he dropped out of this feature. Brown charged from sixteenth to the lead in just eleven laps, but one lap later the green #22 was pulling to the infield.

Colter Deutsch took the lead of the Hobby Stock feature on the opening lap and the two-time champion was untouchable out front as he drove off to the win. Josh Klay finished second with Lane Brenden in third. Kevin Prussman finished fourth just ahead of Jon DeBoer.

When you remember to get you mom something for Mother's Day, take her out to Huset's this Sunday when racing action resumes. With all the passing, you will not be disappointed.
