McCarl, Reilly win Sprints, Schettler and Klay in Stock Car to start 50th season at Huset's

By Shawn Neisteadt

(April 25, 2004-Sioux Falls, SD) The new 2004 season marks the fiftieth season of racing at Huset's Speedway. If the action from the opening night is any indication, this could be the best year in the track's illustrious history.

The first green flag of the season dropped on the Outlaw Sprint 25 lap feature, but was soon replaced by a yellow as Clint Garner looped his #40 in the second turn. The field re-aligned for a complete restart of the event. Mike Moore of Des Moines, IA took the lead from the front row with former track champion Chad Meyer taking second from the second row. Jake Peters was on the move with one lap counted as he rocketed past Ryan Voss and Gary DeWall to take third place. The action slowed with three laps counted when the #7x of Larry Ball looked to be spinning out in the first turn. The yellow lights around the track lit as Ball pulled a nifty bit of driving and continued on.

Terry McCarl took off like a rocket ship as the green waved once again. McCarl drove into fifth but was soon grounded as Mark Dobmeier made a bold move under McCarl and took the position entering the third turn. McCarl then followed Dobmeier as they took fourth and fifth respectively form Peters on the sixth lap. Those moves were negated however when Lynton Jeffrey spun the Vortex #10 in turn three.

Moore led the pack to the restart with 19 laps remaining. Meyer exhausted no time on the restart with Moore as Meyer became the new race leader in turn two. DeWall went on the offensive one lap later and took second from Moore. McCarl then repaid Dobmeier as McCarl nabbed fifth. McCarl then led Dobmeier past Peters on the night lap of the event. With 15 circuits remaining McCarl drove into third past Moore. By the twelfth lap the leaders were into lap traffic and that allowed McCarl to overtake second from DeWall. Dobmeier continued to look impressive as he took third from DeWall on the sixteenth lap.

Seven laps remained to be counted when the lead changed hands once again, and this time for good. McCarl raced up to Meyer entering turn one and drove off turn two with the lead. That was all it took to park the Big Game Tree Stands #24 into victory lane for the sixty-ninth time in McCarl's Huset's career. Meyer took second and Dobmeier was third. DeWall crossed the line forth and Gregg Bakker rounded out the top five.

The 360 sprint feature was just as exciting, if not more than the outlaw feature. Eighteen NMRA 360 sprints took the green for the feature after 29 had checked in to start the night

Jody Rosenboom took the initial lead of the 18 lap event and was still doing so as he entered lap traffic on lap seven. By now though, Terry Reilly and Brock Dump were in the hunt and trying to overtake Rosenboom for the lead. Dump tried to make a move past Reilly entering turn three to overtake second. Dump was successful at that part, however Rosenboom was just in front of Reilly. The result was Dump and Rosenboom getting together and spinning in turn four. Those two were able to continue, but had to restart from the rear.

Reilly then inherited the lead, but the rest of the way would not be a smooth sail for the veteran driver. Reilly was struggling through the first turn and youngster Dusty Zomer was closing on the leader in a hurry. The rest was halted with three laps remaining when Rob Danielson took his #46 into the turn two wall. The car climbed the concrete and slammed into the safety fence. The car was a mess, but Danielson walked away unharmed.

Reilly drove uninterrupted in the final three laps to grab his thirteenth career win at Huset's. Zomer came from tenth to take second with Butch Hanssen moving from fifteenth to third. Jake Peters was fourth and Ryan Bickett took fifth.

The Late Model Stock Car Feature was also one for the ages. Chad Schettler took off into the lead from the front row, but the win would not be easy. Rick Goth looked fast as well and would challenge several times. In fact, Schettler and Goth ran side-by-side on laps eight, eleven and twelve. Schettler was able to fend off the challenges and the former hobby class stand out took home his first career trophy from Huset's Speedway. Goth took second. Jeff Kroger inched out Scott Freet for third and Lee Schlumbohm edged out Howard Baartman for fifth.

Josh Klay led the entire distance of the Hobby Stock feature to grab the win. Colter Deutsch gave Klay a run for the money, but took second. Lane Brenden took third followed by Kevin Prussman and Jon DeBoer.

Huset's Speedway continues the anniversary season this Sunday night with action at 8 pm sharp.
