McCarl takes win and Sixth championship

By Shawn Neisteadt

(Aug 31, 2003-Sioux Falls, SD)  Terry McCarl went into the season championship night for the Outlaw Sprints with a comfortable lead in the point standings. He dominated the feature and walked out with the trophy for the night and the season points.

Gregg Bakker took the initial lead of the Outlaw Sprint feature, but Robert Bell spun before a lap could be counted setting up a complete restart.  On the start it was now Micah Schliemann moving into the top spot, but Bakker grabbed the lead off turn four.  Terry McCarl took fourth from Chuck McGillivray on lap two, then McCarl continued his charge as he took third on lap four and then passes Schliemann for second on lap five.  One lap later McCarl took the lead from Bakker in turn four.  That was all she wrote as McCarl walked away from the field to give the 2003 Huset's and Knoxville track champion his eighth win of the season at Huset's.  Bakker was third and fourth went to Schliemann.  Clint Garner finished fourth from ninth and Lynton Jeffrey came from eleventh to fifth.

On the opening lap of the 360 Sprint feature several cars tangled in turn two.  Butch Hanssen and Brad Buysse flipped and their nights were over.  Dusty Wasmund, Troy Meyer and Randy Droescher all sustained damage to their cars, but were able to restart.

Troy Vink grabbed the lead as the field again took the green flag.   That lead lasted until Ryan Bickett shot past Vink entering turn three and into the lead. On the fourth lap, John Miller took third from Joe Riedel and Terry Reilly moved into fourth.  Dusty Ballenger moved into the top five on the sixth lap.  Miller took the second place form Vink on lap seven.  The leaders entered traffic on lap 11, but no one was able to real in the leader as Bickett took his first ever win at Huset's.  Dusty Ballenger finished second with Reilly third.  Mitch Runge finished fourth and Miller rounded out the top five.

Howard Baartman had a great night in the Late Model Stock Car division.  Howard led the entire distance of the feature to take his fourth win of the year.  JJ Zebell was second in the feature with Gary Brown Jr in third.  Chad Overgaard and Don Bickett rounded out the top five.  Then in the Nordstrom's Auto Recycling 30 lap Dash For Cash Baartman picked up $500 for the fastest pit stop and $1000 for winning the race.  Don Bickett was the first car out of the pit stall but had a loose lug nut found upon inspection.  Baartman led the final 10 laps for the win.  Overgaard was second and third went to Matt Steuerwald.  JJ Zebell was fourth and Scott Freet finished fifth.  Gary Brown Jr dominated the first 20 laps, but lost a lug nut in the pit stop then broke the rear end in the #22 just after the restart.

Colter Deutsch also had a super night as he took two wins.  First he won his seventh feature of the season and then won the 12 lap dash for cash.  During the dash for cash, Deutch was hit by another car and flipped his #5 on the front stretch.  Deutsch not only got back into the race, but he dominated in the victory.  Chris Tiesler was second in the feature with Chad Freewalt in third.  Mike McGillivray took fourth and Bob DeBoer was fifth.  DJ Jones, Scott Borkowski and Steve Eliason rounded out the top four in the dash for cash.
