Garner, Brown Take Sertoma Features to Seal Championships

By Shawn Neisteadt

(Brandon, SD-Sept 2, 2002)  Ryan Bickett jumped into the lead of the NRMA 360 Sprint Car feature as the green flag waved to start the 18 lap event.  The red flag replaced the green on the start as Shawn Van Wyhe went around on the start collecting Gordy Vogelaar who flipped the Select Motors #75.  Both drivers walked away but their night had ended.  Bickett resumed leading when the field restarted.  Terry Reilly soon went on the move as he passed Randy Droescher for fifth on lap two and took fourth form Joe Riedel one lap later.

On the forth circuit of the speedway, Bob Gilliland had moved to the high side and was running side by side with Bickett for the lead.  Gilliland took the lead off turn four, but would go for a wild ride as he began the next lap.  Gilliland jumped the cushion in turn one, slapped the cement wall and flipped violently into the turn two fence.  While flipping, the Patriot Homes #11G burst into a ball of flames.  The lead was gone, but Gilliland walked away unharmed.

On the resulting restart, Reilly moved into second ahead of Mike McMahan and Clint Garner shot to the fourth place.  The race was 12 laps old when Reilly used the high groove and momentum to take the lead from Bickett.   Garner followed Reilly on the top side and the two ran nose to tail.  Coming for the white flag, Garner used a slide job to inch ahead of Reilly for the lead.  Garner, who had started thirteenth, led the final lap to take his tenth win of the season on lock up the point championship.  Reilly finished second.  Johnn Cressman used a last lap pass to take third just ahead of Bickett and McMahan.

It took 12 laps for Gary Brown Jr. to come from eighth to the lead of the Short Track Stock Car feature.  Brown also claimed his second straight point title at Huset's with the win.  Perry Tschetter was second and Howard Baartman finished third.  Dan Jensen crossed the line fourth and Rick Goth rounded out the top.

Rick Vander Weide led all 12 laps of the Sportsmen feature to take his second straight Sertoma Race win.  Scott Overgaard finished second and third went to John Luenberg.  John Fitzgerald was fourth and fifth Kevin Spurgin.

Josh Klay inherited the lead of the Hobby Stock feature one lap into the race and held on to take his second win of the year.  Bob DeBoer made several challenges for the lead but settled for second.  Casey Abbas was third and Scott Borkowski was fourth.  Colter Deutsch finished fifth and became the 2002 Hobby Stock Champion.
