Henderson and Meyer Named Co-Champions

By Shawn Neisteadt

(September 1, 2002-Brandon, SD)  For the first time in Huset's Speedway's 48 year history, the season ended with the proclamation of co-champions.  A mere point separated Justin Henderson and Chad Meyer entering the season championship, and when the night ended, the two where locked even just as they started the season in April.

The night started with Henderson setting the Nordica Qualifications quick time.  That gave Henderson a four point advantage going into the heat races.  Meyer would take the win of the first heat with Henderson in second, leaving a 3 point spread going into the feature.  In the "A," Meyer would start second and Henderson sixth.

When the green dropped on the Outlaw Sprint feature, Gary DeWall shot from the pole into the lead.  DeWall was just ahead of Meyer as they entered lap traffic on lap four.  The eighth trip around the track had Henderson moving around Leonard Lee in turn four for fifth place.  On lap 12, Meyer moved to the inside of DeWall as they hit turn one and Meyer drove the #1w into the lead.  Four laps later the red flag came out as Jim Smith put his #33 into the turn one fence.  Smith was uninjured.

The field bunched up for the remaining nine laps and the crowd came to its feet as the Outlaw Sprint season came to its climax.  On lap 21 Henderson took fourth from Gregg Bakker.  At the checkereds, it was Meyer taking his fourth win of the year.  Don Droud made a late race charge for second and DeWall was third.  Henderson crossed the line fourth and Lee was fifth.  "It's good," said Meyer after the win and announcement of the co-championship.  He added, "We both know we're champions.  I think it's fitting for the year we've had."

When asked about the co-championship, Henderson responded, "It was back and fourth all night and when it came down to it we tied.  I guess if it had to be that way, it's better than losing."

Four laps into the 360 Sprint feature, the red flag waved as Lee Goos rode the turn one wall into the fence.  The car came to a stop, and burst into flames.  The track's safety crew was on the scene immediately to put Goos and his car out.  Because of the heroic efforts of the safety team, and the safety equipment, Goos walked away unharmed.    On the resulting restart, several cars tangled on the front stretch including Micah Schliemann who took the worst of it as his #9 flipped several times on the front straight.  Also involved was Bob Gilliland, Randy Droescher, Ron Dobesh, Terry Reilly, John Miller and Johnn Cressman.  All walked away.

As for the race, Ryan Bickett led the first 12 laps of the race until Clint Garner was able to take the top spot in lap traffic.  Garner claimed his seventh win of the year and Bickett was second.  Joe Riedel finished third and Lyle Howey was fourth.  Fifth place went to Gordy Vogelaar.  Bickett, Riedel and Mike McMahan won the heat races.

Perry Tschetter led the first nine laps of the Short Track Stock Car feature until a mechanical problem would cost him the spot.  Don Bickett inherited the lead and held off the pack to take his first win of the 2002 season.  Rick Goth was second and JJ Zebell was third.  Fourth place went to Darrin Korthals and Howard Baartman rounded out the top five.  Bickett and Jeff Kroger won the heat races.

The Short Track Stock Cars also competed in the special Nordstrom's Dash for Cash.  The race started a field of 11 cars in rows of three.  The race format had it go 10 laps and then the field bunched up with a caution.  Then it was 10 more laps of racing.  At the end of the second 10 lap session each car came down the front stretch for a 2 tire change and five gallons of fuel.  Bickett went into the pits stop second just behind Goth, but a 27 second stop would propel Bickett's Orange Peeler #17 back into the lead.

Bickett led the next four laps of racing until Tschetter took the lead on lap 24.  Tschetter held of Gary Brown to take the win and the $1,000 check.  Brown was second and Baartman was third.  Bickett finished fourth and Dan Jensen charged to round out the top five.

Colter Deutsch led the final 4 laps of the Hobby Stock feature to take his sixth win of the year.  Scott Borkowski was second and third went to Josh Klay.  Bob DeBoer and Tammy Kracht rounded out the top five.  DeBoer led all 12 laps of the Nordstrom's Hobby Stock special event to take that win.  Borkowski, Klay and Steve Eliason took the heat races.  Andy Wieczorek won the "B" feature.
