Stewart Takes Gumout Series Win at Huset's

By Lenny Ferguson

Shane Stewart picked up his third World of Outlaws Gumout Series victory of the 2002 season Saturday night at Huset's Speedway in Brandon, South Dakota. It broke a streak of bad luck for the Bixby, Oklahoma hot shoe. Stewart last won on July 28th at Fonda, New York. The win also gave Stewart his tenth career Gumout Series win and moved him ahead of 2000 Gumout Series Champion Craig Dollansky for the all time series lead in A Main wins.

The front show consisted of Gaerte Engines Dash winner Dennis Moore and B & B Oval Tracks Products Dash winner Jeremy Campbell. Moore would move to the point from the opening green flag of Doug Clark and lead for the first six laps. Stewart was chasing Moore as they entered into lapped traffic. Stewart would take the lead for one lap on lap seven, but Moore wouldn't be denied as he would retake the lead on lap eight. Unfortunately for Moore he would be involved in a crash as they exited turn two. The red would also involve Jason Sides with a flat tire, Tyler Walker with a ruptured fuel tank,  Jeremy Campbell, and new track record holder and Ronald Laney Huggins Cams fast qualifier Terry McCarl. It was McCarl's third Gumout  Series fast time of the season. McCarl and Moore would not be able to restart  Sides would restart and come all the way back to finish fifth, while Waker would charge back to fifth before suffering more problems later on in the race. Walker would finish seventh.

The final yellow would appear for Don Droud on lap thirteen. Stewart would then go on to win followed by Huset's regular Chad Meyer, Peter Murphy, Ohio's Phil Gressman, and Sides. Long time Gumout regular Bob Bennett would come home with a strong sixth place finish, followed by Lynton Jeffrey, Ricky Logan, Justin Henderson, and KSE Hard Charger award winner Craig Keel frome his twentieth starting position. Tonight's Gumout feature event was represented by drivers from twelve different state plus two drivers from Australia.
