First Annual Jay Egge All Star Memorial at Huset's a Success

By Shawn Neisteadt

(July 14, 2002-Brandon, SD)  History was made Sunday night at Huset's Speedway as the track hosted the First Annual Jay Egge All Start Memorial.  The event honored Butch Schlager, Jim Branson, Gary Bott, Jim Matthews, Terry Turbak, Bill Rook, Dennis Grave, Roger Larson, Darryl Dawley, Paul Reisdorfer and Steve Haman.  Those honored are 11 individuals that have given the ultimate sacrifice to Huset's Speedway in its 48 year history.  To honor these gentlemen, double features were run in all four classes.

Kenny Hansen took the early lead of the first Outlaw Sprint 25 lap "A" feature.  Justin Henderson moved into second place at the completion of the first lap when he passed Leonard Lee.  Jason Sides moved into the top five on lap three.  With six laps counted, Micah Schliemann looped his Hansen Motorsports #4H in the first turn to bring out the caution.

On the resulting restart, Sides took the fourth position from Australian, Lynton Jeffrey.  Terry McCarl moved into fifth on lap eight when he passed Jeffrey in turn two.  McCarl passed Sides for fourth in the fourth turn of the same lap, but Sides battled back and retook the position on lap 10 exiting the fourth turn.  Sides then passed Lee for third place on lap 12.

After several attempts at the lead, Henderson took the top spot from Hansen at the finish line to end lap 14.  On the next lap the front runners found themselves in thick lap traffic.  On that lap, Sides took second away from Hansen.  Lee took the third spot from Hanson on lap 16 and McCarl moved into fourth on lap 17.  With four laps to go, Lee fell victim to McCarl at the start of the backstretch.  Sides then lost the second position to McCarl on the next lap.

At the checkereds it was Henderson holding on to put his Citywide Insulation #R19 in victory land for the first time this season.  McCarl finished second followed by Sides.  Jeffrey came back to take fourth and Lee rounded out the top five.

To complete the night, the finish of the first feature was inverted for a second 25 lap Outlaw Sprint feature.  Doug Martens took the early lead, but the red waved on lap four when Gumout Series regular, Sides and Jake Peters tangled on the front stretch.  Both drivers were unharmed but were out of the feature.  On the restart, Brad Pake flipped in the fourth turn and collected Chad Meyer, Don Droud and Chuck Swenson.  Pake walked away from the accident, but his car was unable to continue.  The others made it back to the speedway for the remaining 21 laps.  The caution waved on the next restart when John Lambertz bumped the back of Martens and spun to the apron.

When racing resumed, Schliemann pulled into the lead on the exit of the second turn.  By the tenth lap of the race, Droud had rocketed from sixteenth on the restart to fifth place.  Droud took fourth from Martens on lap 11 and McCarl moved by Martens on lap 12.  Gregg Bakker had been in third place since lap 10, but on lap 20 Droud passed Bakker for the position.  Droud continued to charge forward as he took the second place from Gary DeWall with three laps to go.  With two laps remaining, McCarl shot from fifth to third and was on the rear bumper of Droud.  On the final lap, McCarl made an effort for second but Droud would hold on.  Schliemann made the right moves in lap traffic to hold on and take his first Outlaw Sprint feature win of the year.  Droud was second followed by McCarl.  DeWall was fourth and Bakker took fifth.  The heat races were won by Schliemann, McCarl and Meyer.  DeWall won the "B" feature.

Dusty Ballenger took the lead of the first 360 sprint feature with one lap completed and would go on to celebrate his first win of the year.  Johnn Cressman finished second followed by Gordy Vogelaar.  John Miller took fourth and Terry Reilly finished fifth.  The field was flipped and the second feature was run 18 laps.  Troy Vink took the lead at the drop of the green, but Clint Garner would snag the top spot entering turn one for the second time.  Garner was untouchable as he went on to take the win.  Cressman and Vogelaar again finished second.  Lee Goos took fourth and Vink rounded out the top five.  The consolation feature was won by Buck Wilson.

In Short Track Stock Car action, JJ Zebell led the final nine laps of the first feature to take his second win of 2002.  Dan Jensen finished second followed by Howard Baartman, Chad Overgaard and Gary Brown Jr.  Brown led eight laps if the second feature to take the trophy home.  Ray Feltman Jr. came out of retirement and finished second followed by Overgaard, Jensen and Jeff Kroger.

Tim Dann took the lead of the first Hobby Stock feature with two laps remaining and went on to take his first win of the year.  Darwin Klaassen charged from tenth to take second and Bob DeBoer, Adam Thielbar and Larry Kracht rounded out the top five.  Matt Jensen led all 12 laps of the second feature to take his first career Huset's win.  Colter Deutsch finished second with Kracht, Casey Abbas and DeBoer completing the top of the order.  Klaassen and Shaun Jurrens won the "B" features.
