McCarl Takes Fifth Win of the Season

By Shawn Neisteadt

(July 7, 2002-Brandon, SD) Don Droud Jr and Butch Hanssen led a large field of Outlaw Sprint Cars to the start of the 25 lap main event. Droud would claim the lead in the first turn and Justin Henderson came from the second row to the second spot. Terry McCarl moved into fifth place on lap two when he passed Gary DeWall. On the next lap, Chad Meyer lost fourth place to McCarl on the exit of turn two.

Droud continued to lead when the leaders ran into slower traffic on the fifth lap of the event. On the sixth trip around the speedway, Hanssen was passed by McCarl in turn four for third place. Two laps later, Henderson went high into turn one and McCarl used the low line to take the second place. On the eleventh lap McCarl and Droud ran side by side, but McCarl got the drive off turn for to take the lead. Henderson passed Droud for second place one lap later.

With 16 laps counted, the races first yellow flag waved for Terry Karn who was sitting stalled in turn two after spinning out. On the restart, the front wing on Hanssen's #8 flew up and wedged between the car's hood and top wing. The caution would wave and Hanssen was able to dislodge the broken nose wing and restart at the back of the field. The caution waved once again on lap 19 when John Lambertz spun at the exit of turn four.

On the ensuing restart, Jason Sides took the fourth spot from Chad Meyer. Out front, McCarl was unstoppable as he drove to his fifth victory of the season. Henderson finished second with Droud in third. Sides finished fourth and Meyer rounded out the top five. The heat races were won by Droud, McCarl and Meyer. Sides set the Nordica Qualification quick time.

With 1 of 18 laps completed in the 360 sprint feature, the caution would fly. Troy Meyer slowed on the speedway with steering problems. Mitch Runge held the restart lead. At the restart, Randy Droescher took second from Joe Riedel and Micah Schliemann moved into the top five in turn four. On the seventh lap Johnn Cressman took second from Droescher and one lap later Schliemann took third. The yellow hanky waved over the speedway with 10 laps counted as Troy Vink stopped in the fourth turn with a mechanical failure.

On the restart, Schliemann took second from Cressman but Cressman would battle back and retake the spot. Schliemann took second once again on lap 11 and this time he would be able to hold off Cressman. On the same lap, Clint Garner moved into the top five, but on lap 14 Garner kissed the turn one wall sending him back to the sixth position.

Out front the Texaco Pocket Rocket was untouchable as Mitch Runge led every lap to take his first win of the season. Schliemann took second with third going to Cressman. Lee Goos came from ninth to take fourth and Droescher took fifth. Runge, Schliemann and Droescher won the heat races. Vink won the "B" feature.

Chad Overgaard would hold off several challenges by Gary Brown Jr. to take his first Short Track Stock Car feature win of the year. "It doesn't really bother me who is following me as well as it is good, clean racing," said Overgaard on the nose to tail racing. "I race the track and if he passes me, he's faster." Brown was second and Howard Baartman took third. Fourth place went to Don Bickett and Scott Freet rounded out the top five. Overgaard and Baartman won the heat races.

Colter Deutsch took the lead of the Hobby Stock feature one lap into the event and never relinquished the spot to take home his fourth trophy of the season. Bug Kracht took second followed by Casey Abbas. Fourth place went to Tim Dann and Don Gerritsen Jr. took fifth. The consolation feature was won by Matt Jensen. Deutsch, Nick Bahr and Bob DeBoer were victorious in heat race action.

Next Sunday Huset's Speedway makes history with the first annual Jay Egge All Star Memorial race featuring double features in all classes.
