Meyer Takes Third Win of Season

By Shawn Neisteadt

(July 3, 2002—Brandon, SD) Huset’s Speedway celebrated Independence Day one day early and it would have Chad Meyer making the right moves to take his third win of the season.

Leonard Lee shot from the pole position into the lead as the field took the green flag to start the 20 lap outlaw sprint main event. On the second lap, Gary DeWall had moved up two positions and was into the third spot. Jake Peters entered the top five on the third circuit of the speedway. On lap four, Peters went on the move and passed two cars to move into third. Terry McCarl followed Peters and moved into fourth place. Exiting the fourth turn on the eighth trip around the speedway, McCarl would overtake the third spot from Peters.

Lee continued to lead as the top four cars were nose to tail when they entered lap traffic on lap 9. On the twelfth circuit, McCarl passed Meyer exiting turn two, but Meyer would have none of it and he would reclaim the second spot with a slide job on the other end of the speedway. Two laps later, Meyer dove to the bottom of turn three and used another slide job to take the lead away from Lee. McCarl passed Lee for the second spot on the next lap.

As the checkereds waved, it was the V.J. Julius Motorsports #1w of Chad Meyer picking up his third win of the season. McCarl finished second followed by Lee. Peters held on to fourth and DeWall rounded out the top five. “I knew it was time to be real aggressive. I saw him (McCarl) and Jake coming,” said Meyer about the late race action. “When he (McCarl) passed me, I got a real good run off two and that was about the same move I used on Leonard.” The heat races were won by John Lambertz and Butch Hanssen. McCarl set the Nordica quick time.

Troy Meyer held the lead of the 360 sprint car feature for the first 13 laps of the race, but would take a tumble on the front stretch. Lee Goos Jr. was attempting to take the lead exiting the fourth turn, but would slide up and slam the #1 car of Meyer into the wall causing Meyer to take a wild ride. Meyer would walk away uninjured, and Goos was disqualified.

That gave the lead to Clint Garner and he would lead the final five laps to put his Verhey Enterprises #17v into victory lane for the fourth time this season. Dusty Ballenger finished second with Terry Reilly in third. Gordy Vogelaar took fourth and John Miller finished fifth. Troy Meyer, Bob Gilliland, and Miller won the heat races. Joe Riedel won the “B” feature.

Howard Baartman would hold off a hard charging Gary Brown Jr. to take his first Short Track Stock Car feature win of the season. Baartman, a grandfather of 17, took the lead on lap three and would never relinquish the spot to take his seventeenth career win at Huset’s. Brown finished second followed by Jeff Kroger. JJ Zebell took fourth and Rick Goth rounded out the top five. Baartman and Perry Tschetter won the heat races.

Shaun Jurrens led all 12 laps of the Hobby Stock feature to take his first career Huset’s win. Tim Dann finished second with Adam Thielbar in third. Josh Klay took fourth followed by James Brower. Klay, Jurrens and Bob DeBoer won the heat races.
