McCarl Returns to Winning Ways at Huset's
(June 30, 2002-Brandon, SD) Jake Peters claimed two feature wins in a row to keep Terry McCarl out of the winner's circle, but McCarl would return to top of the class on Sunday night.
As the field took the green flag on the 25 lap Outlaw Sprint main event, Justin Henderson grabbed the lead from fellow front row starter, Don Droud Jr. With only one lap counted, Jake Peters was up to the fourth spot. The caution waved with two circuits counted when the #4H of Micah Schliemann stopped with a mechanical failure on the backstretch.
On the resulting restart, the Big Game Hunting #24 of McCarl rocketed from the eighth position into the top five. Henderson continued to lead as the front runners caught the back of the field on lap six. The slower traffic bunched up the lead cars and allowed the field to catch Henderson and the Citywide Insulation #R19. McCarl moved into the fourth place on lap seven and one lap later took third from Gary DeWall. On the tenth trip around the 3/8 mile oval, McCarl passed the TK Concrete #55 of Droud and set his sights on Henderson and the lead.
Henderson made a slight mistake on the cushion exiting turn four and that allow McCarl to take the lead to begin lap 14. Three laps later Henderson lost second place to DeWall. Gregg Bakker moved into the top five when he overtook Peters on lap 19.
Twenty laps had been put in the books when Chad Meyer climbed the turn four wall and launched his #1W on a wild ride. Meyer would walk away unharmed.
After the red flag, the field lined up nose to tail behind McCarl, but he would be untouchable en route to career win 57 at Huset's. DeWall would take second with Henderson in third. Droud finished fourth with the State Bank of Fairmont #11x of Bakker rounding out the top five. "I like to take it easy the first couple of laps," said McCarl, who also set the Nordica Qualifications quick time, after the win. "I take it easy so I can feel where my car is good," he added. The heat races were won by Terry Karn and Schliemann.
One lap into the 18 lap 360 sprint car feature, Kory Rawstern flipped in the fourth turn. Several other cars were collected including Terry Reilly, whose car would suffer too much damage to continue in the event. All drivers walked away from the accident.
Gary Johnson had the lead, but had to change a tire during the red flag period. That gave the restart lead to Lake County Speedway 2001 Rookie of the Year, Ryan Bickett.
Bickett stayed in the top spot until Micah Schliemann took the position exiting turn two on the third lap. Schliemann would run away during the remaining 15 laps and lapped all but the six cars. Schliemann started eleventh and passed ten cars in the first three laps to put the Premiere Builders #9 in victory lane for the fourth straight week. Clint Garner charged from thirteenth to take second place. Dusty Ballenger took third with Troy Vink in fourth. Lee Goos Jr. came from seventeenth to round out the top five. Johnson, Brock Dump and Bob Gilliland took the heat races. Johnn Cressman won the "B" feature.
Gary Brown Jr. and Howard Baartman battled back and fourth for the lead of the Short Track Stock Car feature, but the battle ended on lap 13 when the two cars made contact spinning both machines. Chad Overgaard and Mark Henry were also collected. That gave the restart lead to Perry Tschetter and he would hold on for the final two laps two take his second Huset's Speedway victory of the season. Don Bickett took second and Dan Jenson finished third. Fourth place went to JJ Zebell and Henry came back to round out the top five. Baartman and Tschetter won the heat races.
With two laps remaining in the Hobby Stock feature, Darwin Klaassen and Bob DeBoer raced door to door for the lead, but that would be ended on the backstretch. Klaassen was sandwiched between DeBoer and a slowing car. The contact would cause Klaassen to go flipping through the air. Klaassed walked away from the scene and DeBoer would sustain damage to his car as well. Don Gerritsen Jr. was the recipient of the restart lead and the sixteen year old rookie would hold on for his first ever win at Huset's. Adam Thielbar took second followed by Colter Deutsch. Tim Dann and Jon DeBoer rounded out the top five. The hobby stock heat races went to Klaassen, Deutsch, and Casey Abbas.
The Pennzoil World of Outlaws invades Huset's on Tuesday. A full point race is scheduled for Wednesday night.
