McCarl Returns to Take Third of Season

By Shawn Neisteadt

(June 9, 2002-Brandon, SD)  Gregg Bakker and Butch Hanssen led the large field of Outlaw Sprints to the drop of the green flag for the feature.   Bakker jumped into the lead with Jake Peters coming from the second row to the second position.  With one lap completed, Terry McCarl had already taken third.  Completing the lap, McCarl passed Peters for the second spot.  On lap four, the leaders entered lap traffic and that allowed McCarl to overtake Bakker for the lead.  Peters made his way passed Bakker on lap six for the runner up spot.

As the leaders worked through heavy lap traffic, Peters caught McCarl and took the lead exiting turn four on the seventh trip around the speedway.  Hanssen took the third position from Bakker on lap nine.  The caution waved on lap 14 when the A & B Auto #2D of Dusty Ballenger slowed on the speedway.

On the resulting restart, Troy Meyer took a wild ride in the third turn.  Meyer's #11 rode the cement wall, slammed into the catch fence and tumbled back onto the speedway.  Meyer walked away uninjured.

Peters lead continued to lead until lap 22 when McCarl took the top spot entering the first turn.  McCarl led the final three laps to claim his third win of the year.  "I was hoping for no yellows and lap traffic there at the end," said McCarl, pilot of the Bosma Poultry #24.  "He had a good line on the top and I wasn't going to be able to get him in the open."

Peters, who had a 360 engine, finished second followed by Hanssen.   Bakker took fourth with Justin Henderson taking fifth.  Heat race wins went to McCarl, Wade Nygaard and Troy Meyer.  Chad Meyer set the Nordica Qualification quick time.

Shawn Van Wyhe took the early lead of the NMRA 360 Sprint feature, but would lose the spot after spinning out in the third turn with one lap down.  That gave Micah Schliemann the restart lead.  On the next lap, Clint Garner took the fourth spot exiting turn two.  Exactly one lap later, Garner lost the handle of his #17v and spun in the second turn.  Mitch Runge was collected and damage to his car sidelined him for the rest of the event.  Garner was able to restart.  The yellow flew once more when Mark Slendy spun out on lap nine.

Schliemann was untouchable on his way to his 19th career win at Huset's.  Lee Goos finished second just a few feet ahead of Lyle Howey.  Troy Meyer finished fourth.  Garner charged up after restarting 16th to salvage a top five.  Van Wyhe, Runge and Troy Vink were all victorious in heat race action.

With two laps to go in the Short Track Stock Car feature, Gary Brown and Chad Overgaard battled for the lead side by side off turn four.  Brown and Overgaard bumped as Brown took the lead.  Flagman, Doug Clark ruled the pass too rough and black flagged Brown.  When the shuffling was completed, Rick Goth took the checkereds to claim his first career Short Track Stock Car win at Huset's.  Howard Baartman took second followed by Dan Jensen.  Overgaard took fourth and JJ Zebell was credited with fifth.  The heat races were won by Jeff Kroger and Mark DeBoer.

Bob DeBoer claimed his first ever win in Hobby Stock action.  Second place went to Don Gerritsen, Jr.  The third place finish was scored by Adam Thielbar.  Jon DeBoer and Devin McMartin rounded out the top five.  Heat race wins went to Darwin Klaassen, Shaun Jurrens and Coulter Deutsch.
