McCarl claims title with 10th win of the year

By Todd Hoffman

Brandon, SD: It was a spectacular night for Terry McCarl Sunday night at Huset's Speedway.  Not only did he pick up his 10th win of the year at the track, he also became Huset's Speedway's winningest driver with 53 career wins and clinched his unprecedented fifth Outlaw Sprint track championship.  "This win helped us meet two of the goals we set at the beginning of the year", said McCarl.  "It was our 20th feature win overall, and it gives us the point title. Our third goal is to win the Knoxville track championship." Pole-sitter Chuck McGillivray jumped to the early lead and led the race's first 5 laps with Kenny Hansen running a close second.  On lap number six McCarl used the bottom groove through turn 4 to pass both Hansen and McGillivray and claimed the lead.  From that point on he was never seriously challenged.  Chad Meyer, who holds 2 feature wins at the track this season, put together another impressive run to finish second.  Third went to Gregg Bakker, Hansen and Justin Henderson rounded out the top five.  The race was slowed once for an incident in turns 3 and 4 involving the cars of John Bridgeford, Skip Jackson, and Mark Dobmeier. Bridgeford was able to restart but Jackson and Dobmeier were done for the night. Heat race wins went to last week's feature winner John Lambertz and McGillivray.

In the 360 Sprint feature event, Dusty Ballenger, a three-time winner last season, scored his first win at the track in 2001.  Ballenger inherited the midway through the 18-lap event when leader Johnn Cressman's Ford engine let go in and enormous cloud of smoke.  Kevin Droll, who started the event on the outside of the front row, grabbed the early lead but tangled with the backstrecth wall knocking the front end out of the car.  Just as it appeared that Droll had the car shut down in turn 3, it turned sharply down across the track in front of the rest of the field. Amazingly though, all drivers were able to avoid the disabled car of Droll.  Second place went to Gary Johnson with sixteenth starting Clint Garner claiming third.  Micah Schliemann and Mitch Runge rounded out the top five.  Heat race wins went to Ballenger, Runge, and Johnson.

Don Bickett held off a hard charging Lee Schlumbohm in the Late Model Stock Car feature event.  It was the first win of the year at the track for Bickett who also won the previous night at Lake County Speedway near Madison, SD.  Schlumbohm held onto second as Ray Feltman came from deep in the field to finish third.  The rest of the top five included Chad Overgaard and the August 12th feature winner, Perry Tschetter.  Heat races went to Tschetter and Howard Baartman.
