Lambertz claims first career win
By Shawn Neisteadt
Brandon, SD-With the fans in the stands jumping, cheering, and celebrating, John Lambertz picked up his first career feature win by a matter of inches over Kenny Hansen. Hansen and Chuck Swenson led the field of Outlaw Sprints to the green flag. After running side by side down the backstretch, Hansen claimed the lead with his Garry Jensen Trucking #4. As the field began to sort out, Chad Meyer moved into the third and then passed Swenson on lap two for second. Lambertz moved into the top three by passing Swenson on the next lap. Hansen and Meyer battled wheel to wheel for the lead and took the battle into lap traffic on lap eight. The slower cars wouldn't hamper the racing though, as the two continues the fight. As Terry McCarl moved into fifth place on lap fourteen, Gregg Bakker suffered mechanical problems and would slow just in front of the leaders. The top three cars made it by unharmed, but Peter Murphy would spin the Williams Motorsports #0 around in turn one and relinquish the fourth position. On the ensuing restart, Chad Meyer would dive to the bottom of turn one, catch the inside of the speedway, and the Lunstra Farms #1w would go sliding across the track and lose the second position to Lambertz. Also on the restart, Skip Jackson moved from sixth to fourth by passing McCarl and Swenson. McCarl would overtake Swenson on the next lap for a top five position. Meanwhile, upfront, the side-by-side battle for the lead resumed. Hansen stuck to his top line and Lambertz now ran his John Byre Construction #12L on the bottom of the track. The two cars ran dead even as they came to the white flag. As they entered turn one, Hansen made a defensive move and ducked lower on the track. Hansen would pull to a slight advantage in the middle of the turn, but Lambertz would get the better run coming off two and the cars were again even on the backstretch. Hansen ran into turn three on the high side and Lambertz stuck to the bottom. The cars ran side by side, and wheel to wheel all the way to the finish line where Lambertz took the win by a matter of inches over Hansen. Chad Meyer finished third. Skip Jackson piloted the Vermeer Motorsports #55 to a fourth place finish. Terry McCarl, who set the Nordica Qualifications quick time with a lap of 10.980 seconds, brought the Bosma Poultry #24 to a top five finish. "Awesome, awesome," is how Lambertz described taking his first career win. Lambertz also admitted he didn't think he had a chance at winning after the restart. "I though Droud may blow by me at any time, and Chad (Meyer) was pretty fast. I knew no one was going to get underneath me. I just held my own." "Kenny went high and gave us the room. I though I won by a mile, but they told me it was pretty close," continued the winner, who also wanted to thank Hansen for running him clean. Heat race wins went to Meyer and Hansen.
The youngest driver to ever win a sprint car race at Huset's, Mitch Runge, led al 20 laps of the 360 sprint feature to claim his fourth feature win of the season. Donovan Peterson came to the line second, followed by Dusty Ballenger. Terry Reilly came from ninth to finish fourth and Gary Johnson rounded out the top five. Heat race wins went to Runge, Ballenger, Reilly, and Butch Hanssen.
