Meyer moves to second win of the season

By Shawn Neisteadt

Brandon, SD-Kenny Hansen and Chuck Swenson led the field of Outlaw Sprints to the green flag, and Hansen claimed the lead as the field exited the second turn.  On the third lap, Huset's Speedway visitors, Tommy Tarlton and Kevin Frey battled for a top five position, with Tarlton claiming it.  Two laps later, Gregg Bakker piloted his American Salvage #11x past Tarlton on the backstretch and claimed the fifth spot. While the battle for the fifth position was happening, Swenson and Chad Meyer were battling side by side for the second position.  After many laps of wheel to wheel racing, Meyer gave Swenson a slide job as they exited turn for to complete the eighth lap.   Hansen entered traffic on lap nine and began to pick and choose his way through the slower cars. By lap 13, Meyer had caught the Gary Jensen Trucking #4 of Hansen and dove under him.  The two cars battled for the lead, Hansen using the cushion, and Meyer using the short way around the track.  The cars battled until Meyer exited turn four of the fifteenth lap as the new leader. Meyer would go on to put the Kim's Refrigeration #1W into victory lane for the second time this season.  Hansen finished second.  Bakker came from the eleventh starting position to finish third.  Jake Peters finished fourth with Gary DeWall passing five cars to claim the fifth position. "I could see Kenny pulling away.  I tried to get by Chuck as fast as I could to get to Kenny," said Meyer on the long battle with Swenson for second. Meyer used a bottom groove for the majority of flag to flag event.  "The track was really fast down there.  A lot of times the track is fast on top, but it was pretty equal tonight." Justin Henderson set the Nordica Quicktime with a lap of 11.180 seconds.  Heat race wins went to Meyer and Frey.

Joe Riedel snatched the lead of the NMRA 360 Sprint main event at the drop of the green.  Six laps later, the Duffy Farms #11R caught extremely dense lap traffic.  On the next lap, a rookie mistake was made as Riedel drove over the rear of a slower machine.  The car would suffer minor damage, but stop on the backstretch and cause a caution flag.  The crew went to work to get Riedel, a Huset's rookie, back into the event, but he had to relinquish the top position and restart from the rear. Riedel's misfortune was Mitch Runge's big break as he inherited the lead.  Clint Garner moved into the top five on the restart, and two laps later, point leader, John Miller passed Kevin Droll for second.  Garner picked off Jeremy Kasten on lap ten for fourth, and three laps later, took the third spot from Droll. Butch Hanssen, moved by two cars on lap 15 and sat in the fourth position, but mechanical problems set in and the Holiday Inn #8 would stop on the speedway and go to the infield to end Hanssen's night. Runge led the rest of the way to put the "Pocket Rocket" into the winner's circle for the third time this season.  Miller came from tenth to finish second.  Garner came from eleventh to finish third.  Kory Rawstern came from ninth to fourth and Droll held on for a top five finish. Runge, Joe Peterson, and Randy Droescher claimed wins in the heat races.  Doug Martens won the "B" feature.

Howard Baartman fought of constant challenges for the lead by Lee Schlumbohm and Gary Brown Jr. to win his sixth Late Model Stock Car feature of the year.  Brown came form seventh to the runner-up position.  Schlumbohm finished third.  Dan Jensen and Matt Steuerwald rounded out the top five.  Schlumbohm and Ray Feltman Jr. won the heat races.
