Cressman claims Sertoma Charity Race Win

By Shawn Neisteadt

Brandon, SD--Hobby Stocks and Sportsmen joined Late Model Stock Cars and 360 Sprint Cars for the ninth running of the Midtown Sertoma Charity Race.  A large crowd would not be disappointed, as the racers would put on a great show. Johnn Cressman jumped from the pole position into the lead of the 360 Sprint feature as Doug Clark dropped the green flag.  Cressman would pull to a slight advantage over Troy Vink, but the distance was erased as the yellow flag waved on lap two when Justin Clark and Lyle Howey tangled together and stopped in turn four.  Both cars returned to action, but Howey's car was missing the front wing. Bob Gilliland and Steve Haman tangled in turn two of the restart sending both cars flipping.  Haman, who was celebrating his birthday, was able to put the car shiny side up and continue to race, but Gilliland pulled the Patriot Himes #11 to the infield and ended his evening. The field again restarted, and again Cressman was able to pull away as Vink and Randy Droescher battled for the second spot.  Eventually, Vink would pull his Thorstenson Properties #77 into second.  The battle cost Droescher momentum that allowed Gary Johnson to claim the third position on lap four.  The yellow again came out over the speedway with five laps in the books as Joe Peterson spun out in turn one and backed the car into the wall.   Peterson's evening was over. On the ensuing restart, Cressman's engine would stumble, but clear itself out and the young man would hold onto the lead.  Johnson overtook the second position on the next lap when he gave Vink a slide job in turn four.  Terry Reilly also maneuvered his way around Vink and into the third position.  Cressman and the rest of the leaders entered traffic on lap nine, but Donovan Peterson and Kory Rawstern would have problems on the tenth circuit of the speedway and again the caution was out. Cressman led the remaining eight laps to take home his first ever Huset's Speedway win.  Terry Reilly came from the twelfth starting position to runner-up. Gary Johnson finished third with Clint Garner in fourth.  Point leader, John Miller rounded out the top five. "Doug Wolfgang told me this track is one of the hardest to master, so it feels awesome to win here," said Cressman, who will be a senior in high school this fall.  "I just wanted to keep my momentum and keep the guys behind me from passing me." Heat race wins went to Reilly, Vink, Donovan Peterson, and Joe Peterson.  Garner won the "B" feature.

Brad Wollman took the lead from Rob Anderson on lap ten of the Late Model Stock Car feature and went on to claim his first win of the season. Ray Feltman Jr. came from the tenth starting position to finish second.  Rob Anderson came to the line third.  Gary Brown Jr. finished fourth.  Fifth went to JJ Zebell who was driving for Dale Furby. Howard Baartman, Perry Tschetter, and Matt Steuerwald scored heat race wins.

Rick Vander Weide piloted the PC Doctor #6 past Jeff Hertel on a lap three restart to take the lead of the Sportsmen feature.  Vander Weide would never look back as the "King of the Meadows" would claim the win.  Lake County Speedway's point leader, Rick Goth came back from a tire change on lap two to finish second.  Evan DeHaan, Hertel, and Jeremiah Jordahl rounded out the top of the order. Heat races were won by Jeff Wittrock and Goth.

Darwin Klaassen's Hobby Stock drove like a Cadillac, as he would take the checkereds in the feature.  Dean Dunkelberger, who led the first half of the race, finished second.  John Luinburg finished third with Jeff Beck and Andy Wieczorek rounding out the top five. Jeff Hoogendoorn, Jeremy Steinle, and Lyle De Vries won the heat races.  Justin Selken claimed the "B" feature.
