McCarl takes number nine on Hall of Fame Night

By Shawn Neisteadt

Brandon, SD-With many of the early greats of Huset's Speedway watching, Terry McCarl would again prove to be the cream of the crop in the Outlaw Sprint division.  McCarl started the night by setting the Nordica Qualification fast time with a lap of 11.08 seconds.  Then, McCarl won his heat race.  To top the night off, he'd come from the fourth row to win the feature. Scott Fokken jumped in front of Chuck Swenson as the green flag dropped on the Outlaw Sprint "A" feature.  Swenson would battle Fokken for the lead, but the Impact #1 of Fokken pulled away.  Australian, Peter Murphy, piloted the Willaims Mptorsports #0 into the second position on lap four.  McCarl followed him past Swenson and sat in the third spot. Murphy and McCarl battled until lap six when McCarl overtook the second position.  Fokken began making his way through lap traffic on lap eight, and McCarl would reel him in and take the lead on the ninth circuit.  Murphy used lap cars to his advantage and claimed second on lap 14. McCarl went on to take the win by half a track over Murphy, who had also won a heat race.  Gary DeWall finished third with Dennis Moore Jr. in fourth.  Kenny Hansen rounded out the top five. "Second is good," said Murphy after the race.  "But, I'd like to beat him.   He's just too bloody good around here." The win is also #52 for McCarl, tying him with Marty Barber for the most total wins at Huset's.

Joe Peterson took the early lead of the 18 lap NMRA 360 sprint feature, but Mitch Runge would take the top spot with a slide job on lap two.  On the next lap, Peterson spun his car in turn four.  Amazingly, all cars would miss the spinning #20. Mark Slendy claimed second on the restart, and Butch Hanssen, who had started eleventh, moved into fourth.  On the race's fourth revolution, Hanssen overtook Mike Ellingson and third place. The yellow flag again waved for Peterson on lap five.  Johnn Cressman would bring out another caution when he spun on the restart and collected several other cars. Hanssen moved around Slendy on the restart for second, and Terry Reilly took third from Slendy on lap six.  The leaders ran into lap traffic on the eleventh trip around the track, and that's when Hanssen and Reilly would use their veteran skills to go to the top spots.  Hanssen moved into the lead on lap 14 with Reilly passing Runge for second on the following lap.   Hanssen and Reilly ran nose to tail and side by side in the closing laps, but Hanssen would claim his second win of the season.  Reilly finished second from starting position 10.  John Miller came from ninth to finish third.  Runge and Slendy rounded out the top five. Heat race wins went to Peterson, Runge, Ellingson, and Steve Haman.  Buck Wilson claimed the first "B" feature with Joe Riedel winning the second.

The racing grandfather of 17, Howard Baartman, led all 15 laps of the NMRA Late Model Stock Car feature to put the DJ's Bar #82 into victory lane for the fifth time this season.  Gary Brown Jr. came back from a flat tire on lap three to finish just behind Baartman.  Matt Steuerwald finished third.  Don Bickett piloted the #17 to a fourth place finish.  Rob Anderson crossed the line fifth.
