Reilly Returns

By Shawn Neisteadt

Brandon, SD--Terry McCarl had 50 wins to his credit going into the evening.  The 50 wins tied him with Marty Barber for the most career wins in one division.  With another win, McCarl would sit all alone in the Huset's Speedway Record books.  McCarl again asserted himself early by setting the Nordica Quick Time with a lap of 10.950 seconds. When the green flag dropped on the Outlaw Sprint main event, Chad Radel jumped from the pole position and claimed the lead.  On lap two, McCarl moved into the fifth position after starting eighth.  One lap later, Chad Meyer used the bottom groove and overtook the lead from Radel.  When Meyer was overtaking Radel for the lead, McCarl was taking the fourth position away from John Lambertz. McCarl moved into third on lap four by passing Kenny Hansen, and on lap eight, Radel fell victim to McCarl as the Bosma Poultry #24 pulled into second and set his eyes on the lead.  Meyer entered traffic on lap nine and began picking his way through it.  McCarl was closely following the Wilmer Motorsports #1w of Meyer as they pulled away from the rest of the field. In turn three of lap 15, a slower car would bobble in front of Meyer, causing him to slow and giving McCarl the lead.  The caution flag waved two laps later as Lambertz had steering problems and spun out on the front stretch while battling within the top five.  Meyer would make an attempt to reclaim the lead on the restart, but would clip the inside of the track in turn three allowing McCarl to stretch his lead and claim his eighth win of the season.  Meyer finished second.  Radel finished third with Gregg Bakker and Hansen rounding out the top five. McCarl and Radel won the heat races.

Eric Lutz jumped into the lead when the green flag dropped on the 18-lap NMRA 360 Sprint feature, but Kevin Droll hit the turn two wall and stopped on the track causing a caution and a complete restart.  Brent Vonk claimed the lead on the second start and led for the first time ever at Huset's.  On lap two, Mitch Runge took second from Lutz in turn one.  As Lutz went down the back chute, he climbed the wall and flipped violently.  The accident collected several other cars, but all drivers involved walked away uninjured. Racing resumed, and on lap five, Runge would dive under Vonk and take the lead exiting turn four.  At the same time, Terry Reilly had moved from his tenth starting position into the top five.  Reilly passed Bob Gilliland and Vonk for the second position on lap seven. The leaders entered slower traffic on lap nine.  Runge, the youngest driver to ever win a feature at Huset's, led the way through the traffic until the Watertown Wizard, Reilly, gave Runge a slide job on turn four of lap 15 for the lead.  Reilly went on to claim his first win since he came out of retirement three weeks ago.  Runge finished second.  John Miller came from eleventh to finish third.  Gilliland finished fourth and Clint Garner charged from fifteenth to round out the top five. "It feels good," said Reilly after the win.  "It's been tough.  I'm a little out of shape and the kids are faster," he added about his exit from retirement. Lutz, Runge, Gilliland, and Doug Martens scored heat races wins.  Justin Clark won the first "B" feature and Donovan Peterson won the second.

Howard Baartman led all 15 laps of the NMRA Late Model Stock Car feature to claim his fourth win of the season.  Matt Steuerwald finished second with Jeff Kroger in third.  Lee Schlumbohm finished fourth with Don Bickett finishing fifth. Heat race wins went to Steuerwald and Bickett.
