McCarl and Schliemann take sprint wins
By Shawn Neisteadt
Brandon, SD-That time of year has come again. Midseason at Huset's Speedway. A time for drivers to reflect on the season they have had thus far. A time to look forward, and most importantly, it's still a time for racing. Jake Peters and Mark Toews led the field of Outlaw Sprints to the green flag, but by the time they reached turn one, Peters had claimed the lead. With one lap complete, Toews, who had claimed the second position, slammed into the turn one wall and flipped the Northern Tool and Equipment #5T. Although the crash was very violent, Toews walked away uninjured. As the field restarted, Chad Radel would overtake Peters and put the Lithia #25 into the lead. Terry McCarl would move into fourth by Gary DeWall, but DeWall repassed McCarl and reclaimed the position. But, on the third lap, McCarl would get a great run on the backstretch and pass DeWall and Peters and move into the third position. Gregg Bakker, who was now running second, dove under Radel on the eighth lap, but was unable to make the pass. On the next lap though, Bakker would pass Radel while coming off turn four and move into the top spot. The leaders entered traffic on the tenth lap, and McCarl moved into the second position and began to run down Bakker. Gary DeWall, running the bottom groove of the speedway, soon moved into the third position. On the fifteenth revolution, McCarl and Bakker would run side by side with McCarl taking the lead entering turn one. McCarl would lead the remaining five laps to claim his sixth win of the season in the Bosma Poultry #24. Bakker brought the American Salvage #11x to the line second. DeWall came to the line third with Radel and Justin Henderson rounding out the top five. Heat race wins went to Peters and Kenny Hansen. McCarl had the Nordica Qualifications fast time with a lap of 11.557 seconds.
Eric Lutz led the first twelve laps of the NMRA 360 sprint feature, but would not be able to take the win. Lutz had built a large lead, but the yellow flag waved on lap eleven for Buck Wilson, as he had tangled with another car and spun out. The restart bunched the field up, and as the leaders exited turn two, Donovan Peterson would make a run on the outside of Lutz, and jump his tire. Peterson would have suspension damage and cause a caution as he stopped on the speedway. Also, Lutz spun out coming off turn four. Peterson would retire for the evening with damage, and Lutz would have to restart from the back off the pack. The incident gave Micah Schliemann the lead and he would lead the remaining six laps of the event to take his first win of the season. "It feels good to be back at 100 percent," said Schliemann, who started tenth to win. "I had a lot of confidence." Terry Reilly started ninth and finished second. The Iceman, Randy Droescher, finished third. John Miller started twelfth and finished fourth. Mark Slendy rounded out the top five. Miller, Lutz, Steve Haman, and Troy Vink won the heat races. Lyle Howey won the "B" feature.
"We've been struggling, and it feels great," said Jeff Kroger after leading every lap of the Late Model Stock Car feature to take his first win of the season and fourteenth of his career. Don Bickett finished second. Dale Furby came from starting position eight to finish third. Gary Brown Jr. started ninth and finished fourth. Ray Feltman Jr. came from the tenth starting position to round out the top five. Heat race wins went to Greg Mulder and Bickett.
