Meyer rockets to first victory of the season

By Shawn Neisteadt

Sioux Falls, SD--As the United States turned 225 years old, Huset's Speedway celebrated with a full racing program and shot off the largest fireworks display of the area to cap off the evening. To make things even better, Lithia of Sioux Falls sponsored the evening, and brought the admission price to $2.  Fans would take advantage of the price break, and a packed grandstand would watch some of the season's best races.

As the green flag dropped on the Outlaw Sprint main event, Chad Radel pulled his Lithia #25 into the lead.  Justin Henderson claimed the second position on the second lap. As the race continued, Chad Meyer overtook the third position from Kenny Hansen on the sixth lap.  On the next lap, Meyer passed Henderson and set his sights on the lead.  The ninth circuit around the speedway saw Meyer pull under Radel and lead momentarily, but Radel charged back to take the lead. The leaders took the halfway signal and continued to race, this time, coming off turn two, Meyer dove under Radel and drove into the lead. The yellow flag waved on lap 12.  While running third, Henderson drove into turn one too hard and slammed into the wall.  The car would never roll over, but the damage was bad enough to keep the City Wide Insulation car on the infield for the rest of the event. As the field restarted with Meyer continuing to lead, Dennis Moore Jr. moved the DeeZee #71 into the second position.  Terry McCarl, who restarted sixth, made a charge and passed three cars in the next lap. Meyer, who started in the eighth position, would hold on and bring the Cargill Ag Horizons #1w into victory lane for the first time this season.  Moore and McCarl followed to the line.  Radel finished fourth and Gregg Bakker rounded out the top five. "When everyone is real close, the front guys can check out," said Meyer on the importance of a good start of a race.  Meyer passed seven cars in the first 10 laps of the event. Radel and Moore claimed heat race wins.  Terry McCarl set the Nordica Qualifications fast lap with a time of 11.05 seconds.

Bill Smith held the early lead of the NMRA 360 sprint main event, but the race would be halted when Kory Rawstern slammed into the turn two wall and collected Bob Gilliland.  Gilliland would restart in the race, but a severely damaged sprinter would prevent Rawstern from restarting. Smith was still leading when Donovan Peterson caught him on lap six.  The two cars would trade the lead several times until Peterson would finally claim the spot on lap eight. Peterson held on to take his second win of the season.  Doug Martens came from the fourth row to finish second.  Randy Droescher used set up advice from World of Outlaw star, Danny Lasoski, and finished third.  John Miller started seventeenth and charged forward to take fourth.  Smith claimed his first top five finish of the year with his fifth place finish. Heat race wins went to Brett Stegenga, Mitch Runge, and Gary Johnson.  Joe Peterson won the "B" feature.

Howard Baartman led every lap of the NMRA Late Model Stock Car "A" feature to claim his third win of the season and second in a row.  Mark DeBoer made several attempts at the lead, but would have to settle for second place.  Dale Furby came to the line third with Brad Wollman and Gary Brown Jr. rounding out the top five. Heat race wins were claimed by DeBoer, Lee Shlumbohm, and Don Bickett.
