Kinser Regains Points Lead at Huset's

By Richard Day

BRANDON, SD (July 3) -- Mark Kinser's passion for Huset's Speedway is similar to the love Danny Lasoski has for Knoxville Raceway.

Kinser passed Lasoski for the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series points lead Tuesday at Huset's just three days after "The Dude" moved into first place at Knoxville. Kinser's fifth "A" Feature victory in the series' last six at the high-banked, 3/8-mile oval resulted in the seventh change at the top of the standings since early March.

"Danny (Lasoski) and I have been going back and forth on this point thing for a while now," Kinser said following his ninth victory of the season. "He's certainly a driver I like racing with; he's respectable guy you can race side-by-side with anytime.

"We really enjoy coming here to Sioux Falls. There are some tracks that we're just kind of ho-hum about, but we really look forward to racing in front of the people here. The turnout at the parking lot party last night was great; I've never had anything but a good time here."

Kinser, who holds the single-lap record at Huset's Speedway, was the third-fastest qualifier in the 40-car field Tuesday. He followed Craig Dollansky across the finish line in the Third O'Reilly Heat Race and raced past two cars in the CHANNELLOCK Dash to claim the third row inside starting position in the 30-lap main event.

Jeff Shepard, who won his third CHANNELLOCK Dash of the season, burst into the lead from the pole as the green flag fell in the "A" Feature.  Second O'Reilly Heat Race winner Andy Hillenburg steered his #2 Luxaire J&J into the low groove in turn one to pass outside pole-sitter Jac Haudenschild for second place early in the opening lap.

Kinser took the low line through turns three and four to pass "The Wild Child" for third place the next time around. Fast-qualifier Tim Shaffer drove the #11H Vivarin Maxim around Haudenschild high in the fourth corner three laps later.

The leaders were approaching lapped traffic early in the sixth lap when Johnny Herrera spun in turn two, bringing out the caution flag.

Donny Schatz, who won the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series main event at Huset's Speedway April 29th, took over fifth place with an inside move past Haudenschild and Dollansky between the first and second corners as the green flag replaced the yellow.

Hillenburg passed Shepard for the lead deep in turn two early in lap seven, and Kinser used a similar move between the third and fourth corners to take over second place several seconds later.

Kinser was just inches behind Hillenburg when the leaders caught the back-markers during the 11th lap.

Sammy Swindell, who started outside the fourth row, steered his #1 CHANNELLOCK Stealth into the low groove in turn one to pass Schatz for fifth place two laps later.

Kinser challenged Hillenburg for the lead while Shaffer and Dollansky raced past Shepard during the race's middle stages. The Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series' two-time champion steered his father Karl's #5M Mopar Maxim to the lowest point between the first and second corners to take over first place early in lap 19.

Danny Wood tightened the field and opened the track ahead of the leaders four laps later when he stopped Sher-Don Motorsports #21W Pepsi Avenger in turn four with a broken rear axle.

"B" Feature winner Stevie Smith and Dollansky passed Schatz for fifth and sixth place, respectively, two laps after the race resumed.

Kinser was seven car-lengths ahead of Hillenburg when he entered lapped traffic again with 1 1/2 lap remaining. He took the checkered flag with 10 car-lengths to spare. The $10,000 victory was the ninth of Kinser's career at Huset's Speedway.

Shaffer held off Swindell for third place. Dollansky finished fifth, ahead of Smith, Schatz, 16th-starting Steve Kinser, Huset's Speedway points leader Terry McCarl and Paul McMahan.

Shaffer set quick-time for the third time this season, pacing the qualifying session with a 125.839-m.p.h. lap.
