Huset's kicks off July California style

By Shawn Neisteadt

Sioux Falls, SD--With the Pennzoil World of Outlaws scheduled to race on Tuesday, Jason Meyers came to the Huset's Speedway for the Sunday night program looking to gain track experience, and that he did. When the green flag dropped on the 25-lap Outlaw Sprint main event, Kenny Hansen claimed the initial lead, but soon Gregg Bakker made his claim on the top spot.  Bakker continued to lead as he ran into lap traffic on the sixth revolution, at the same time, four-time track champion, Terry McCarl, and 2000 Gumout Series Rookie of the Year, Jason Meyers traded slide jobs for the fifth position. Luck would not be on Bakker's side as a mechanical problem forced him to relinquish the top spot, and park the #11X car for the night.  Bakker's misfortune gave the restart lead to Hansen. When the field restarted, Meyers would move around Clint Garner and into third.  On the following lap, Meyers overtook Skip Jackson's second position and set his sights on Hansen.  With eight laps remaining, Meyers gave Hansen a slide job coming off turn four.  Hansen dove back under the DOCC Motorsports #20 and the two cars charged down the front stretch.  The side-by-side battle was interrupted on the next lap when Garner's engine expired, causing the car to stall on the speedway. Because Meyers had inched out Hansen on the previous lap, he held the restart lead.  Hansen made several attempts to reclaim the lead, but would lose the second spot to Jackson.  McCarl and Hansen would trade slide jobs with five laps remaining, with McCarl eventually taking the spot. Meyers, who had started tenth, held on to claim the win.  Jackson gave his Vermeer Motorsports #55 a second place finish.  McCarl finished third followed by Hansen.  Dennis Moore came from starting position nine to round out the top five "Anywhere you go in the country, the local competition is tough," commented Meyers, the Fresno, Ca native.  "This is one of the places they're really tough." Hansen and Scott Fokken claimed heat race wins.  Justin Henderson had the Nordica Qualifications fastest lap with a time of 10.740 seconds.

With one lap remaining in the NMRA 360 sprint feature, Mitch Runge, the youngest driver to ever win a sprint car feature at Huset's, overtook the lead from Joe Peterson to go on and claim his second win of the season.  Peterson finished second. Butch Hanssen came from starting position ten to finish third.  John Miller started ninth and finished fourth.  Points leader, Lee Goos finished fifth. The race was interrupted when Steve Haman flipped his car on lap nine.  The car was damaged, but Haman walked away uninjured. Heat race wins went to Runge, Miller, Donovan Peterson, and Doug Martens.  Gary Johnson won the "B" feature.

With five laps remaining in the Late Model Stock Car feature, Gary Brown took the lead from Lee Schlumbohm and drove to his fifth win of the season.  Schlumbohm finished second.  Darrin Korthals started in position 12 and charged forward to finish third.  Rob Anderson and Perry Tschetter rounded out the top five. Heat race wins went to Dale Furby, Brown, and Schlumbohm.
