McCarl, Peterson, Brown ride the wall to victory

By Shawn Neisteadt

Sioux Falls, SD-In his Huset's Speedway debut in the City Wide Insulation car, Justin Henderson took the lead as the green flag dropped on the Outlaw Sprint 25 lap feature.  Jake Peters took the second position by passing pole sitter, Matt Wasmund on the second lap, and Terry McCarl had already maneuvered from his seventh starting position into the top five.  Peters had his car break extremely loose coming off turn two on lap four, allowing Henderson to lengthen his lead.  At the same time, McCarl moved into third.  Henderson entered into dense lap traffic on the fifth revolution as McCarl overtook second from Peters. Racing was slowed and Henderson's advantage was erased by a lap seven caution for Wasmund, Gregg Bakker, and Tim Monson's tangled cars on the backstretch.  Wasmund was able to restart, but the night had ended for Bakker and Monson. The race resumed, and Henderson pulled five car lengths in front of McCarl.  Also, the battle for a top five finish heated up as John Lambertz and Skip Jackson traded slide jobs.  Henderson and McCarl were again in lap traffic at the halfway point.  The following lap, McCarl split Handerson and a lap car to overtake the lead. The yellow flag waved over the speedway with 14 laps counted for Lambertz.  Lambertz would be able to restart, but he had to take the Byre Construction car to the back of the field. One lap after the restart, Chad Meyer spun his Wilmer Motorsports car and relinquished the fourth position.  During the caution, Don Droud Jr. had to change a left front tire and give up the fifth position. The caution waved for the last time as Mark Dobmeier got into the turn four wall and stopped.  Lamberts had nowhere to go and ran into the stopped car of Dobmeier.  The incident ended the evening for both drivers. McCarl held on for the remaining five laps to claim his fifth win of the season and win 48 of his career at Huset's.  Henderson finished second with Peters in third.  Australian, Skip Jackson, finished fourth and Chad Radel came from starting spot 16 to finish fifth. "I think Justin was just as fast as me, so we had to wait for traffic," said McCarl, driver of the D & G Concrete #24. Droud set the Nordica qualifications fastest time of the evening with a lap of 11.04 seconds.  Heat race wins went to Mark Toews, Scott Fokken, and Monson.  Steve Ballenger won the "B" feature.

Donovan Peterson led all 18 laps of the NMRA 360 sprint feature to take home his second win of the season.  The race was red flagged with one lap completed when Rick Adams and Bob Gilliland flipped and collected three other cars including point leader, Lee Goos. Again the red waved over the speedway on lap nine for Jeremy Fey, who had flipped in turn two.  The incident again collected Goos and also Kevin Ingle.  Goos would not be able to make it back onto the track in time for the restart, ending his race along with Ingle.  Fey was able to put the car right side up and continue. Peterson rode the cushion for the next nine laps and crossed the line first.   Dusty Ballenger finished second.  Mike Ellingson, John Miller, from the fifth row, and Joe Peterson rounded out the top five. Joe Peterson, Donovan Peterson, Adams, and Brett Stegenga won the heat races.  The "B" feature went to Micah Schliemann.

Gary Brown Jr. took the lead of the NMRA Late Model Stock Car feature on lap 10 and led the last eight laps to claim his fourth victory of the season.  Dale Furby finished second.  Don Bickett finished third.  Brad Wollman came from the fifth row to finish fourth with Matt Steuerwald following him to the line.  The caution free race featured two, three, and even four wide racing. Heat race wins went to Bickett and Furby.
