Bakker takes feature win over McCarl
By Shawn Neisteadt
Before the Outlaw sprint "A" feature, one question hung in the air, could anyone stop McCarl? When the feature ended, the question was answered. Gregg Bakker stepped up to the plate and took his first 410 sprint feature win of the season and his career. Steve Ballenger and Jake Peters led the field of Outlaw sprints to the green flag, and by the time the field entered turn one, Ballenger had claimed the lead position. It only took five laps for Ballenger to catch the rear of the field and begin lapping cars. At the same time, Bakker had moved from his eighth starting position to the third spot. Bakker took over second from Peters on lap eight, and on the following revolution, Peters found the turn three wall and flattened his right rear tire. His crew would be able to change the tire, but Peters had to give up his third position and restart in the rear. As the field restarted, Ballenger continued to lead until his engine expired ending his evening and hopes of a victory. Ballenger's tough break proved to be Bakker's big break as the American Salvage #11x now had the lead. On the following restart, Skip Jackson overtook the second position from Tim Monson. One lap later, McCarl passed Monson to put the Bosma Poultry #24 into third. The only red flag of the event came out for Don Droud Jr. as he hit the turn four wall and flipped while battling for the fourth position. Droud, who set the Nordica Qualifications quick time with a lap of 10.72 seconds, walked away uninjured, but the Mark Burch Motorsports car was done for the evening. The ensuing lap eleven restart had Bakker pull away from Jackson and McCarl as the two battled for the second position. McCarl eventually took the second spot from Jackson on lap 18, but Bakker had accumulated a large enough lead to take the victory by a straightaway over McCarl. Jackson finished third followed by Monson and Kenny Hansen, from starting position twelve. "We've been trying to beat him for four years now," said Bakker on beating McCarl. "I drove it as hard as I could without wrecking it. We finally got a win."
Jeremy Kasten took the early lead of the 360 sprint main event, but the yellow hanky waved with only two laps completed for Bill Fredin's spun car in turn four. Fredin's machine collect Justin Saathoff, ending the night for Saathoff as his car had to be taken to the pits by the wrecker due to a mangled front suspension. One lap after the restart, Donovan Peterson passed Kasten for the lead. The two would battle for several laps with Kasten on the inside line and Peterson banging the right rear into the cushion. The side-by-side battle continued until Kasten looped his car while exiting turn four. Kasten was able to pull off the complete 360 spin and continue, but the incident resulted in Gary Johnson catching the front straight a way wall and pointing the nose of the Jack's Service #18 skyward before spinning due to steering damage. Dusty Ballenger lost the third position to Buck Wilson with four laps remaining. On the next lap, the left rear tire blew ending Ballenger's race. Peterson held on after the restart to take his first win of the season. Kasten finished second followed by Wilson, Brett Stegenga and point leader Lee Goos. "You got to be real smooth up there," said Peterson about running the high groove, and added that this was the first feature that he had finished this season. John Miller won the "B" feature.
Howard Baartman looked to have the victory of the Late Model Stock Car feature in the bag, but lost the rear bumper of his car on the white flag lap. Because the debris on the speedway caused a caution, Baartman had to restart from the rear and give up the lead, which he had from the drop of the green flag. Gary Brown Jr. received the restart lead and held on to take his second win in a row. Brad Wollman came from the fifth row to finish second. Dale Furby finished third followed by Ray Feltman Jr. and Dan Jensen. Wollman's runner-up finish moves him into the point lead by one point over Feltman.
