McCarl Takes Opening Win

By Shawn Neisteadt

It took eleven laps for Terry McCarl to move from the eighth starting position into the lead. Jake Peters and Justin Henderson, each returning to 410 racing, would lead the field of 20 outlaw sprint cars to the green flag.  Henderson, the 2000 Huset's 360 point champ, rode the cushion and pulled into the lead coming off turn two.  Wade Nygaard drove his JD Byrider #9 past Peters to take the second position with two laps in the books. The red flag came out as Don Droud Jr. spun, to avoid a car that was slowing due to a flat tire; Micah Schliemann slapped the wall and flipped hard as a result.  Droud continued in the race, but Schliemann retired for the evening, but walked away uninjured. On the fourth revolution, McCarl overtook Peters for the fourth position. Frontrunners ran into heavy lap traffic on lap seven.  On the following lap, Nygaard passed Henderson for the lead.  McCarl also passed Henderson, moving the Bosma Poultry #24 into second. After following Nygaard through the traffic for two laps, McCarl pulled into the lead coming off turn two and started to pull away. McCarl ran flawlessly to the checkereds to claim his record 44th victory at Huset's.  Nygaard finished in second followed by Peters, Kenny Hansen, who started in fifteenth, and Tim Monson. "Every time we run here, we get quicker," Nygaard said.  "He's (McCarl) got more experience here than I do, but I think we were catching him at the end." "This place is awesome," commented McCarl, while taking a quick break from signing autographs and exchanging high fives with his younger fans.  "You have to be able to run the top like an animal and the bottom with finesse." McCarl set the fast time at 11.167 seconds.  Nygaard, Peters and Droud Jr. each won a heat race.  John Lamberts won the "B" feature.

A last turn pass made the difference in the NMRA 360 sprint main event. Bill Fredin pulled his car into the lead as the field took the green flag. The cars had completed one lap and were streaking down the backstretch when Dusty Ballenger and Troy Vink tangled, sending Vink into the wall.  As the field tried to check up, Bob Gilliland, Dave Becker and Randy Droescher all tangled and flipped.  All drivers walked away uninjured.  Ballenger's car was the only one able to continue. On the restart, Lee Goos Jr. passed Steve Haman to move into the top five.  The front of the pack continued to be Fredin, Kory Rawstern and Jim Smith. David Beman Jr. caused cautions on laps four and five to end his evening. Goos took the third spot from Smith on the restart, as Rawstern continued to follow Fredin closely. Slide jobs were traded as Ballenger had charged back to the front and challenged Jim Smith.  Ballenger eventually won the battle when Smith brushed the wall while going passed the flag stand. The leaders caught traffic on the white flag lap.  The slower vehicles allowed Rawstern, Goos and Ballenger to catch Fredin. Fredin tried the high line in turn four, but the move allowed Rawstern and Goos to pass.  Fredin, who led all but the last eighth of a lap, finished third.  Ballenger came back for fourth and Haman rounded out the top five. "I really wanted traffic," said Rawstern, who had just won his first ever Huset's event.  "I would've settled for second, but I knew I had a shot in traffic. Rawstern, Fredin and Mark Slendy won the heat races.

Gary Brown Jr led all 16 laps of the Late Model Stock Car feature to take home fourth career Huset's victory.  Perry Tschetter came in a close second, with Rob Anderson on his bumper for third.  Brad Wollman and Ray Feltman rounded out the top five. NMRA Late Model Stock Car Heats went to Brown, Don Bickett and Dan Jensen.
