37th Annual National Cheater's Day

By Rob Ristesund

After becoming Huset’s Speedway’s all-time leader in sprint car feature wins and recording his track-record fourth points championship in 2000, one title remained elusive from Terry McCarl’s resume. That title was claimed by McCarl Sunday as he captured the outlaw sprint feature win at the 37th annual Cheaters Day races.

The race, which had been run most its years at the now-defunct 5/8 mile fairgrounds track in Sioux Falls, was moved this year to the high-banked 3/8 mile oval that has treated McCarl well the last several years. McCarl responded to the friendly confines by taking the lead early in the 25-lap event and cruising to the $4000 win. With the top 12 qualifiers drawing for starting positions in the main event, McCarl drew number three, placing him behind front-row starters Gary DeWall and Gregg Bakker. DeWall set the pace for the first five laps until McCarl swept by first Bakker and then DeWall on lap six to take the lead. After falling to third, DeWall battled back to regain second from Bakker and actually challenged McCarl later in the race before McCarl pulled away the final laps to take the win by the length of the straightaway. DeWall finished second followed by Bakker, Don Droud, Jr., Terry Reilly, Chad Radel and Dennis Moore, Jr., who arrived late at the track and started last in the 22-car field.    Micah Schliemann was running in third with six laps to go when his right rear tire blew, sending him spinning on the front stretch and collecting the fifth place machine of Jake Peters, eliminating both cars.   Droud appeared to have a car that could challenge McCarl, but the luck of the draw had Droud starting in ninth, and the dry-slick surface made it difficult for him to advance quickly through the field.

While Droud’s finish in the event was somewhat disappointing, he did collect a big win by pulling out a thrilling victory in the Ethanol Race of Champions 360 feature.   Front-row starter Randy Nygaard took the lead at the start of the 20-lap event and maintained the point while third-row starters McCarl and Droud ran most of the race second and third, respectively.   Nygaard still held a somewhat comfortable advantage as the trio took the white flag, while Droud moved past McCarl into the second spot coming out of turn two. With Nygaard slowing slightly as he closed upon slower traffic, Droud quickly moved up to challenge and then was able to use a slower car as a pick as the pair exited the final turn. At the finish it was Droud squeezing by to take the $3000 win a car length ahead of Nygaard, with McCarl just a couple of feet behind in third. Schliemann was fourth followed by Steve Ballenger, Butch Hanssen and Justin Henderson.

After suffering more than his share of tough luck at the track this year, Gary Brown, Jr. of Winner finally had things go his way as he dominated the late model stock car feature.   Brown passed Dale Furby on lap four and pulled away to take a convincing win in the 18-lap event. Furby finished second ahead of Duane Bowden, Lee Schlumbohm and Dan Jensen.

After starting at the back of the field following a tire change with six laps to go, Chris Thompson rode the high groove back through the field to just edge race-long leader Duane Hanson at the finish for an exciting win in the modified feature. Jim Cole was third followed by Ron Luitjens and Kelly Harmelink.

The sportsmen feature was another race that was decided on the last lap as Jerry Gronewold passed Darin Miller on the final circuit for the win. Miller settled for second ahead of Chris Ellingson and Rick Vander Weide.

Gronewold appeared headed to another feature win in the hobby stocks until a flat tire sidelined him with two laps to go giving the lead and the win to Dean Dunkelberger. Mike Kiggins was second followed by Michael Fogelman and Randy Bruggeman.

In the front-wheel drives first-ever appearance at Cheaters Day, it was the team of Larson and Klaner taking the feature win. Second went to Claussen and Lunders while Constant and Raml were third.
