Never give up. A good motto to live by, a good motto, as Don Droud showed, to race by.    Droud recovered from an early race incident to roar through the field to capture the outlaw sprint feature Sunday night at Huset’s Speedway. Chad Meyer jumped to the lead in the 25-lap event and looked to have his second feature win of the year locked up until disaster struck with two laps to go.    Meyer was attempting to lap a slower car on the backstretch when the two made contact, sending Meyer into the wall and out of the race. Terry Reilly assumed the point on the restart, but Droud quickly moved around Reilly on the high side on the restart to take the lead and pulled away for the win. “I watched Reilly during the 360 feature to see the best place to run, and I noticed that he went to the low groove on the restarts,” said Droud. “I thought I could pull alongside him running high and slingshot him, and it worked.” Droud was forced to restart the race in 14th on the second lap when Terry McCarl spun in front of him, collecting Droud, Gregg Bakker and John Lambertz. Droud quickly picked his way through the field, but it appeared he would run out of time to catch Meyer until Meyer’s misfortune occurred. Reilly finished second ahead of Kenny Hansen, Wade Nygaard and Gary DeWall. McCarl came from 17th following the lap two incident to finish sixth.

Reilly had a good night at the track as he captured the special 7-Up Challenge for the 360 sprints. Reilly drew the pole position for the race which paid $1277 to win and led the non-stop 13-lap race wire-to-wire. John Miller held off Justin Henderson to take second.

Rookie Kory Rawstern grabbed the lead from Mark Slendy when Slendy slowed for a lapped car on lap eight and went on to win his first 360 sprint feature ever at the track. After losing the lead, Slendy fought back and was challenging Rawstern for the point with five laps to go when he made contact with a lapped car, sending him into the turn three wall and into a violent series of flips on top of the concrete. Slendy was uninjured in the mishap. “I was kind of nervous at the end,” said Rawstern. “After the restart, I wasn’t hitting my spots on the track. Finally, I just concentrated on running my groove and was able to keep the car in line the last couple of laps. I felt sorry for the 1k (Slendy). He’s really a racer.” Randy Droescher challenged Rawstern after the restart before falling back to take second six car lengths behind. Steve Haman took third ahead of Mike Ellingson and Lyle Howey.

Brad Wollman came from the sixth row to pass Todd Sterzinger on the final lap, taking the win by just a few feet over Sterzinger in the late model street stock feature. Dan Jensen was third followed by Dave Olivier and Don Bickett.    Wollman’s win moved him into the point lead over Ray Feltman, who didn’t finish the race.
