Craig Dollansky showed why he sits at the top of the Gumout Racing Series point sheet as he took a convincing win at the eighth annual Gold Cup at Huset’s Speedway Saturday night. Dollansky’s win was his fourth in six days as the tour swings through the upper midwest, giving him eight wins on the season.   “He’s on fire right now,” said Paul McMahan, who finished third. “I don’t know what he has, but he’s been fast.”   Dollansky snatched the lead from McMahan on lap three of the 30-lap event and went uncontested the rest of the way as the race ran non-stop. Jeff Shepherd, currently second in points in the series, got by McMahan with three laps to go to take second. McMahan was followed by Brad Furr, Peter Murphy, Ronald Laney and Jason Meyers.   The heavy lapped traffic from the 24-car field didn’t seem to have much effect on Dollansky as he masterfully weaved his way in and out of the lapped cars throughout the event, eventually lapping all but eight cars. “There’s no better feeling than winning,” said Dollansky. “You have to work hard at it. I’m just part of the team puzzle.” Chad Radel’s eighth place finish was the highest for Huset’s regulars. Terry McCarl worked his way up to 14th after qualifying through the B feature and starting last in the main event. Gregg Bakker was 15th and Gary DeWall 17th. Kraig Kinser, 15 year-old son of Steve Kinser, won his first dash of the year which earned him the outside pole for the feature. Kinser fell back after suffering suspension damage following a brush with the wall and finished ninth. The race was very nearly cancelled due to rain which fell throughout the morning and afternoon, eventually subsiding around 5 p.m.   Hard work by track officials got the racing under way about a half hour late, but the program progressed well and was completed shortly before 11 p.m. The extra moisture made for an extremely fast racing surface, although a narrow racing groove limited passing during the heat races. After some blade work prior to the dashes, the track opened up and remained fast and relatively smooth the rest of the evening.

The late model street stocks were also on the evening’s racing card and it was Todd Sterzinger taking the feature win. Sterzinger passed Jim Baartman on lap four and then held off a late charge by Lee Schlumbohm to notch his second feature win of the year. Ray Feltman was third followed by Baartman and Doug Olivier.
