After a disappointing run at the Knoxville Nationals, Terry McCarl returned to Huset’s Speedway Sunday night in search of a little solace. McCarl wasn’t disappointed, as he ran away with the outlaw sprint feature, his eighth feature win of the year. McCarl came from the fourth row to pass Gary DeWall following a restart on lap seven and went uncontested the rest of the way to win the 25-lap event. The Pleasant Hill, Iowa driver narrowly avoided disaster on the seventh lap when he made hard contact with Tim Kaeding after Kaeding brushed the turn three wall. “I got lucky after I hit Kaeding,” said McCarl. “I thought I was going for a ride there.” Kaeding, a second generation driver from San Jose, Calif., was fast but had a rough night at the track. He rebounded from his incident with McCarl to come back through the field only to slam the turn one wall and flip with five laps to go. Like McCarl, Don Droud had his fortunes reversed from his performance at Knoxville. Unfortunately for Droud, this meant a bad night at Huset’s after an outstanding run at the Nationals. Droud clipped the wall in turn three and flipped on the second lap of the race, ending the race early for the LIncoln, Neb. driver. While McCarl finished far ahead of the rest of the field, Micah Schliemann had a good run as he finished second, while Chad Radel took third. After hitting the wall in his heat race, Chad Meyer recovered in the feature, making a strong run after starting last in the 17-car field to take fourth. Fifth went to Terry Reilly followed by Kenny Hansen and Scott Fokken.

Steve Haman was a happy winner as he took the win in the 360 sprint feature, his first feature win ever at the track in a sprint car.   “I thought this (the win) would never happen,” said Haman. “It feels great!” Haman led the entire 18-lap event, pulling away from the field to win by almost the length of the straightaway. Jeremy Kasten came from ninth to take second, while Dusty Ballenger held off Terry Reilly for third.

Kent Plimpton was another driver to score his first-ever feature win at the track as he led all 18 laps of the late model stock car feature. Plimpton took the win by five car lengths over last week’s winner, Don Bickett. Dave Olivier was third followed by Gus Clark and Dan Jensen.
