MIDTOWN SERTOMA CHARITY RACES

Veteran driver Doug Martens outran the field to win the 360 sprint feature at the annual Midtown Sertoma charity races Wednesday night at Huset’s Speedway. Martens grabbed the lead on lap nine of the 18-lap event and then survived a number of restarts the final half of the race to post his first win at the track in six years. Three red flags and two cautions slowed the race’s pace the final nine laps and sent a number of cars to the infield on the hook. Those suffering sufficient damage to put them out of the race were Micah Schliemann, Terry Reilly, Bob Gilliland, Dusty Ballenger, Randy Droescher and Justin Saathoff. Ballenger, Droescher and Lee Goos were victims of tip-overs while Goos was able to rejoin the race. In spite of the cautions, Martens wasn’t seriously challenged for the lead the final stages of the race and took the win ahead of John Miller, Troy Vink, Justin Henderson, Mike Ellingson and Steve Haman.

Todd Sterzinger led from wire-to-wire to win his first late model stock car feature of the year. Sterzinger took the win six car lengths ahead of 11th-place starter Brad Wollman, while Jim Baartman was third followed by Doug Olivier and 17th-place starter Ray Sveeggen.

Matt Steuerwald took the lead with three laps to go when leaders Jerry Groenwold and Russ Pterson tangled and went on to take the sportsmen feature win.    Peterson recovered to take second followed by Rick Vander Weide, Moose Schuldt and Randy Vander Weide.

Clint Potter took the lead at the start and then held off a fierce challenge by Darwin Klaassen to win the hobby stock feature. Jeremy Smith was third while Laura Mulder took fourth.
