At first glance, Terry McCarl’s outlaw sprint feature win Sunday night at Huset’s Speedway was not unlike many other victories the veteran driver has recorded at the track during his career.   McCarl charged through the field from his fifth row starting spot, ran down and passed race leader Chad Meyer, and then worked his way masterfully through lapped traffic on his way to the win. But this win was different in the significance it carried as McCarl became the track’s all-time leader in career wins in sprint cars. McCarl’s victory was his 39th, breaking his tie with current World of Outlaws driver and former track regular Danny Lasoski.   “It’s a great honor,” said McCarl. “A lot of great drivers have raced at Huset’s and it’s really special to have won the most features.”   McCarl’s win overshadowed a great run by Meyer, a rookie in the outlaw class. Meyer came from the third row to take the lead on lap nine of the twenty-five lap event, and after grudgingly giving up the point eight laps later Meyer fought McCarl to the end, eventually taking second six car lengths back. Last week’s winner Don Droud finished third, followed by Gregg Bakker, Randy Rosenboom, Kenny Hansen and Gary DeWall as the race ran non-stop.

In the 360 sprints, it was John Miller leading all 18 laps to win his second feature of the year. Dusty Wasmund ran close to Miller the entire distance and finished a strong second followed by Donovan Peterson, Gordy Vogelaar and Terry Karn. The race ran caution free until just after Miller first received the checkered flag. Dusty Ballenger clipped the front stretch wall just before taking the checkered and set off a mad scramble behind him as some cars slowed and others sped towards the finish. The inicident halted Butch Hanssen’s charge toward the front as he jumped a wheel and spun to a stop. The race was restarted with Ballenger in the pits and Hanssen tagging the field, and it was Miller holding on the final two laps for the win. Lee Goos’ sixth place finish unofficially moved him into a tie for the points lead with Jeremy Kasten, who finished 14th.

Ray Feltman came from the sixth row to pass Don Bickett for the lead on lap eight and went on to win the 18-lap late model stock car feature, his fourth win of the year. Ray Sveeggen finished a strong second followed by Howard Baartman, Bickett and Doug Olivier. Feltman’s win put him back into the point lead. Gary Brown, the point leader going into the evening’s action, was involved in a grinding crash with Dan Jensen on lap five and did not finish.
