Terry McCarl bounced back from a disqualification the week before to roar through the field and capture the 25-lap outlaw sprint feature Sunday night at Huset’s Speedway.

The evening’s main event had a rough time getting under way as the red flag halted action twice before the first lap could be completed. Pole-sitter John Lambertz was leading the 18-car field following the first start when he spun sideways in turn four collecting the cars of Gregg Bakker and Chad Radel. Even though Radel’s machine ended on its side, he and Bakker were able to make repairs and return for the restart while Lambertz went to the infield. The second attempt at a start saw Grand Forks, N.D.’s Pat Miller flip his machine before making it to the flagstand. Miller was uninjured but unable to rejoin the race. The third attempt at a start was a go and it was last week’s winner Terry Reilly jumping into the lead. While Reilly maintained a comfortable margin over the field, McCarl was working his way up from his ninth starting spot, eventually overtaking Don Droud for second with 11 laps to go but still a full straightaway behind Reilly. It took McCarl just four laps to make up the distance between him and Reilly, and with seven laps to go it was McCarl taking the lead when Reilly jumped the turn two cushion and slowed. McCarl quickly pulled away and went on to capture his 37th career feature win at the track, putting him just one behind all-time win leader Danny Lasoski. Reilly hung on to take second while Chad Radel had an amazing run through the field following his first lap crash to take third. Droud finished fourth ahead of Gary DeWall, Chad Meyer, Wade Nygaard and Bakker. Kenny Hansen’s woes at the track continued as he flipped his car coming out of turn two with four laps to go. Hansen was uninjured.

Dusty Ballenger led all the way as he captured his second consecutive 360 sprint car feature.      Terry Reilly came from the fourth row to pass Mark Slendy for second with five laps to go and made up a bunch of ground to catch Ballenger as the pair took the white flag. But it was the 18-year old driver pulling away on the final circuit, leaving Reilly to settle for second for the second consecutive week. Jeremy Kasten had a good run as he came from the fifth row to take third followed by Bill Fredin, Slendy, Butch Hanssen and Terry Karn.

Lee Schlumbohm snatched the lead from Kent Plimpton on lap seven and went on to win the late model stock car feature. Brad Wollman edged Ray Feltman by inches for second while Rob Anderson and point-leader Gary Brown rounded out the top five.
