Terry McCarl slipped past Micah Schliemann with
seven laps to go and went on to win the 25-lap outlaw sprint
feature Sunday night at Huset's Speedway. Schliemann passed Wade
Nygaard for the lead following a lap three restart, only to have
the race halted on the next lap when Nygaard hit the front
stretch wall and
flipped wildly in front of the grandstand. Nygaard was uninjured
in the mishap. With Schliemann and McCarl leading the field on
the restart, Schliemann quickly pulled away, stretching his
advantage to eight car lengths over McCarl. But then it was
McCarl who slowly worked his way back to challenge Schliemann as
the pair encountered lapped traffic. On lap eleven, McCarl went
to the inside of the rim-riding Schliemann, and the pair raced
side-by-side for several laps, battling each other and slower
cars before Schliemann once again pulled slightly ahead. But with
seven laps to go, Schliemann dropped to a lower groove on the
track in a attempt to pass a lapped car and it was McCarl skating
by on the high side for the lead. Schliemann battled back
briefly, but it was McCarl going on to win his third feature of
the year, moving him to second on the all-time feature win list
at the track, just two wins behind Danny Lasoski. Third went to
last week's winner Gary DeWall, followed by Kenny Hansen,
fast-timer Don Droud, Randy Nygaard and Gregg Bakker. Bakker came
from the back of the 21-car field in his back-up car after
destroying his primary machine while battling with Nygaard for
the lead in the third heat race.
Terry Reilly made it two-for-two as he steered Dave Ekern's sprinter to the win for his second consecutive 360 sprint feature win in less than a week. Reilly led the entire 18-lap event, taking the win by four car lengths ahead of Dusty Ballenger at the finish. Third went to point-leader Justin Henderson followed by Lee Goos and Chad Meyer.
Brad Wollman came from the fifth row to pass leader Lee Schlumbohm on the final lap to take an exciting win in the late model stock car feature. Schlumbohm, who had passed Don Bickett for the lead midway through the 18-lap event, slid high in the second turn of the final lap, allowing Wollman to slip alongside him. The pair battled side-by-side down the backstretch and into turn three and it was Wollman gaining the advantage coming out of the final turn, taking the win by a car length. Third went to Perry Tschetter ahead of Gary Brown and Dan Jensen.
