Terry McCarl tacked a big exclamation point onto his season point title with a victory in the outlaw sprint feature Sunday night at Huset’s Speedway. While Kenny Hansen pulled away from the field early in the twenty-five lap event, McCarl and Craig Dollansky battled their way through the field from their fourth and fifth row starting spots, respectively, with McCarl overtaking Dollansky for the second spot on lap thirteen. With McCarl quickly charging towards the front with Dollansky right behind, Hansen’s advantage of a quarter of a lap quickly diminished until the pair shot by him with seven circuits to go. While Dollansky was able to pull alongside McCarl several times in the closing laps, lapped traffic made it difficult for him to get by the Knoxville champion. The win, McCarl’s fifth of the year, was worth $3000 with bonus money. Hansen held on to take third ahead of fast-timer Gregg Bakker and Gary DeWall.

McCarl wasn’t the only driver of the evening to take home a big check as Todd Sterzinger captured the annual Nordstrom’s Dash for Cash for late model stock cars. The mandatory pit stop with ten laps to go in the thirty lap event was the big turning point as leader Kelly Harmelink and the fourth place car of Dan Jensen were sent to the rear of the field after spilling fuel on the track. The restart found Brad Wollman, whose crew had the quickest pit stop, in the lead followed by Don Bickett, Sterzinger and Ray Feltman. The final ten laps were a torrid four-car battle between those drivers and on the final lap it was Wollman and Sterzinger running side-by-side for the $2500 first place prize. Coming out of the final turn Sterzinger inched slightly ahead and it was an advantage he held to the finish as he took the win by a mere three feet over Wollman. Including lap money, Sterzinger’s winning’s totaled to $2950, while Wollman collected $500 for second plus an additional $500 for the fastest pit stop.

The Pam Oil/Valvoline/AC Delco/Lewis/Pepsi 360 sprint feature saw Micah Schliemann come from the sixth row to take the win.      Bob Zitterich took the early lead and built a huge advantage over the field before Schliemann took over the second spot from Chris Wasmund on the tenth lap of the eighteen lap event. Schliemann had wiped out Zitterich’s advantage and passed him for the lead with four laps to go when the race’s only caution occurred, putting Schliemann back to second on the restart. Zitterich’s second chance at the win lasted only momentarily as Schliemann quickly took the point following the restart and roared on to the win, with Zitterich finishing a distant second. Butch Hanssen came from the seventh row to take third followed by Wasmund and Jeremy Kasten.

Sterzinger’s big win in the Nordstrom race was preceded by his first feature win of the year in the Brandon Valley Insurance late model stock car feature.      Like his other win, Sterzinger battled the entire final lap side-by-side with another driver, this time front row starter and race long leader Kelly Harmelink. Although Harmelink led seventeen laps of the event, the eighteenth and final lap went to Sterzinger as he squeezed out the victory. Following the pair across the finish were Ray Feltman, Dan Jensen and Don Bickett.
