Jason Statler of San Jose, Ca. made his annual trip to Huset’s Speedway following the Knoxville Nationals a profitable one as he collected $2000 for winning the outlaw sprint feature Sunday night. Statler got a good start as he shot past front row starters Jake Peters and Gary DeWall on the first lap to take the lead and went on to win the twenty-five lap main event. Statler quickly opened a comfortable lead over the field and eventually stretched it to a quater of a lap midway through the race. It was at this point that fellow Californian Tim Kaeding, in his first start ever at the track, overtook Peters for the second spot. Although Statler’s advantage was a sizable one, Kaeding slowly cut into his lead as Statler fought lapped traffic late in the race, but time ran out on Kaeding as Statler took the victory by four car lengths at the finish. Third went to fast-timer Gregg Bakker followed by Dennis Moore and DeWall. Peter Murphy brought out his back-up car after flipping in his heat race and brought it all the way from the seventh row to take sixth.

After battling side-by-side for several laps, Chad Meyer took the lead from Chris Wasmund on lap ten and went on to win the eighteen lap Pam Oil/Valvoline/AC Delco/Lewis/Pepsi 360 sprint feature.      Point leader Butch Hanssen worked his way up from the seventh row to pass Wasmund for second with one lap to go, but by then Meyer’s advantage was nearly a half a lap as he cruised to the win. Wasmund scored his best finish ever at the track by holding on to take third ahead of Scott Fokken and Randy Droescher. The race was red flagged on lap ten when Terry Karn clipped the backstretch wall and rode out a wild series of flips into the third turn. Karn was uninjured in the incident.

After spinning out while leading the feature a week ago, Kelly Harmelink kept his machine pointed straight the entire distance this time as he ran away with the Brandon Valley Insurance late model stock car feature.      Harmelink grabbed the lead from Kent Plimpton on lap four of the eighteen lap event and eventually stretched his advantage to half a lap over the rest of the field. A caution with two laps to go when the second place car of Jeff Kroger suffered a flat tire bunched the field on the restart, but Harmelink remained in control as he took the checkered three car lengths ahead of Larry Dixon at the finish. Third went to Plimpton followed by Perry Tschetter and Doug Olivier.
