A beautiful evening, a large crowd and an infield jammed full of cars combined to make the seventh annual Mid-Town Sertoma charity races Wednesday night at Huset’s Speedway a great success.

With the Pam Oil/Valvoline/AC Delco/Lewis/Pepsi 360 sprints headlining the card, a top-notch field of thirty sprinters were on hand and it was Clint Garner taking home the feature win. Garner, who’s racing success has fallen on hard times as of late as he has went from being the point leader early in the season to most recently dropping out of the top ten, took the lead from Darron McCart midway through the eighteen lap event and went unchallenged the rest of the way to score his first feature win of the year at the track. A caution with five laps to go put Dean Brown and Chad Meyer right behind Garner on the restart, but Garner got a good jump on the field as the race resumed as he pulled away and left Brown and Meyer to fight for second. The battle for second between the two ended when Brown clipped the front stretch wall as the pair took the white flag, sending Meyer on to take the runner-up spot uncontested while Brown and his damaged machine limped home to an eighth place finish. Outlaw sprint driver Micah Schliemann brought his 360 car to the track for the first time this year and had a strong run as he came from twelth to finish third, while point leader Butch Hanssen was fourth ahead of Scott Fokken.

Brad Wollman found the high side to his liking as he used that line to come through the field to take the Brandon Valley Insurance late model stock car feature. Kelly Harmelink shot from the front row into the lead at the start of the sixteen lap event, and quickly established himself as being the one to beat in the sixteen car field. But a miscue by Harmelink on lap ten saw him spin his car sideways in the second turn, triggering the caution and forcing Harmelink to the back of the pack on the restart and giving the lead to Gus Clark. While having yet to win a feature event, Clark did a credible job of maintaining the lead while Todd Sterzinger was practically glued to his back bumper as the pair skirted the inside groove of the track. A yellow with five laps to go found Wollman still in seventh, but as the race resumed he began picking off cars one-by-one driving his familiar high line until a red flag halted action for the final time with three laps to go when Mark DeBoer hit the turn two wall and put his car on its top. When the race resumed, Wollman went back on top to pass Sterzinger for second and then battled Clark the final two laps before squeezing out the victory. Following the trio at the finish in fourth was point leader Dan Jensen while Harmelink rebounded from his spin to come back through the field to take fifth.

While the sportsmen class doesn’t race on a regular basis at the track, when they do compete during special events one car that always runs strong is the one driven by Shawn Kleuver, and Wednesday night was no exception. Kleuver and his strong running machine were no match for the rest of the field as he came from the fourth row to take the lead in just three laps and went on to an easy win in the feature. Second went to Rick Goth followed by Mark Henry, J.J. Zebell and Jeff Wittrock.

Chuck Harming led all the way but had to withstand a furious late charge by Darwin Klaassen to win the hobby stock feature. While Harming’s front row start gave him clear sailing all the way, Klaassen, after qualifying through the “B” feature, was forced to start fourteenth and passed nearly every car in the event to work his way up to second and fall just short at the finish. Third went to Rick Wibeto ahead of Doug Van Liere and Dale Tomes.
