Luck plays a big part in auto racing, and a prime example of that statement was exhibited Sunday night at Huset’s Speedway.

Gary DeWall, a past champion at the track who has suffered harder times as of late, looked to be headed toward his first outlaw sprint feature win at the track in seven years as he dominated most of the twenty-five lap event. DeWall shot from his front row starting spot at the start of the event and quickly opened a comfortable lead over the seventeen car field. Not even a couple of restarts, including a red flag on lap four when Kenny Hansen got on his side, seemed to slow DeWall as he seemed destined for the $2000 payday that awaited the winner. But with four laps to go, a huge cloud of smoke erupted from DeWall’s powerplant, signalling the end of an excellent run for the veteran and leaving him understandably frustrated in the infield. DeWall’s misfortune turned out to be Terry McCarl’s good luck, as McCarl had just worked his way up from the fifth row to overtake Gregg Bakker on the same lap for second. As he alluded to following the race, the gracious McCarl felt the race was DeWall’s and he would be forced to settle for second until DeWall’s misfortune. After inheriting the lead, McCarl motored the final laps uncontested for his third feature win of the year, with Bakker taking second. Jason Statler of San Jose, Ca. had a strong run in his first appearance at the track this year to take third ahead of Leonard Lee and Marlon Jones.

John Miller scored his first feature win of the year as he captured the Pam Oil/Valvoline/AC Delco/Lewis Drug/Pepsi 360 sprint feature.      Miller got by race-long leader Daron McCart with four laps to go and led the rest of the distance for the win. Point leader Butch Hanssen had another strong run as he came from the sixth row to take second, just two car lengths behind Miller. Hanssen looked as though he might have something for Miller as he made his charge but the eighteen lap event proved to be a little too short for Hanssen to mount a serious challenge. Like Hanssen, Randy Nygaard passed a bunch of cars as he came from the eighth row to take third, while McCart and Dean Brown rounded out the top five.

Kelly Harmelink outran an eighteen car field to take his second Brandon Valley Insurance late model stock car feature of the year.      Harmelink took the lead from Jeff Mott on lap six of the eighteen lap event and then came out on top of a duel with Brad Wollman to take the win. Wollman came from the fourth row to challenge Harmelink in the middle stages of the race, but when Harmelink spun triggering a caution with five laps to go, officials ruled that Wollman was the cause of the incident, giving Harmelink the lead on the restart and sending Wollman to the back of the field. It was a lead Harmelink would not relinquish, although at the finish Scott Freet was right on his bumper followed by sixth row starter Dan Jensen.
