Two sprint car drivers in their first appearances at the track this year scored their first feature wins in several years in racing action Sunday night at Huset’s Speedway.

In the outlaw sprints, Dave Ekern’s first night behind the wheel this season saw him take the $2000 win, his first feature victory at the track in five years.      Rookie Micah Schliemann passed Ekern on the second circuit of the twenty-five lap event and quickly opened a sizable lead. Schliemann appeared headed for his first ever outlaw win on the hardened track where passing was at a premium due to warm temperatures and high winds which buffeted the high-banked 3/8 mile oval throughout the evening. But Schliemann’s run came to an abrupt halt on the eleventh lap when he tangled with a lapped car and tagged the wall at the end of the front straightaway, forcing him and his damaged machine to the infield for the remainder of the event. Schliemann’s misfortune gave the point back to Ekern, and the veteran driver maintained it the rest of the way in spite of pressure by Gregg Bakker, who was right on Ekern’s nerf bar as the pair took Doug Clark’s double-checkereds. Jason Wendt had a great run to finish a solid third, just ahead of Leonard Lee, Jake Peters and Nordica Bonded Public Warehouse fast-timer Terry McCarl.

Randy Nygaard took the seat in Buck Wilson’s #3b for the evening and parlayed that along with a front row starting spot into his first Pam Oil/Valvoline/AC Delco/Lewis/Pepsi 360 sprint car feature win at the track in four years. Nygaard, who hasn’t driven regularly at the track in several years, led all eighteen laps in the capturing the non-stop event, eventually taking the win by almost half a lap. Troy Vink ran second the entire event, and just held off Brett Stegenga to take the runner-up spot. Stegenga took the $100 Hard Charger award in coming from his tenth starting spot to take third. Randy Droescher and Chris Wasmund rounded out the top five.

Marty Barber looked to follow suit with his first Brandon Valley Insurance late model stock car feature win in several years as he held the lead for most of the event. But as Barber kept his car glued to the bottom of the track with several cars right behind him most of the way, Dan Jensen came from the sixth row via a higher line on the track. While none of the front runners dared leave the low groove, Jensen made it look easy as he picked them off one-by-one, eventually overtaking Barber with two laps to go and pulling away to take the win by three car lengths. Dale Furby also went to the high side on the final lap to just edge Barber for third, while Todd Sterzinger came from the last row to take fourth ahead of Jeff Kroger.
